Fourth biker killed during 2007 rally

A fourth motorcyclist has been killed in the Black Hills area during the Sturgis motorcycle rally.
Hazel Miller, 58, of Hagerman, Idaho, was a passenger on a 2002 Honda trike driven by Paul Sales, 60, of Wendell, Idaho, when it went off Interstate 90 and down a steep embankment about 10:47 p.m. Thursday about seven miles east of Sturgis.
Miller was pronounced dead at the scene. Sales was airlifted to Rapid City Regional Hospital with serious injuries, according to a South Dakota Highway Patrol report. He was listed in fair condition at the hospital on Friday.
Neither rider was wearing a helmet.
The Highway Patrol also identified a motorcyclist killed Thursday morning on Nemo Road about four miles west of Norris Peak Road. Charles Lanam, 54, Aurora, Colo., lost control of the 2005 Harley-Davidson motorcycle he was riding, went into the south ditch and died at the scene, according to the Highway Patrol. Lanam was not wearing a helmet. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
The first motorcyclist killed during the rally was James E. Long, 63, of Danville., Ind., who died Saturday evening, Aug. 4, when his bike went off the Badlands Loop Road south of Wall.
The second person killed was Chester Wayvolt, 48, of Louin, Miss., who was killed Tuesday night when his motorcycle collided with a deer on U.S. Highway 14A east of Deadwood.
So far in the Black Hills and Badlands area, the Highway Patrol has investigated 74 injury accidents. It has arrested 249 people for driving under the influence, 198 people on drug charges and 47 on felony drug charges.
One incident occurred at 4:52 p.m. Thursday, when a Highway Patrol trooper stopped an eastbound 1999 Ford van on I-90 west of Spearfish for several traffic violations. The trooper deployed his police service dog and a search revealed 5.5 pounds of marijuana and hashish oil. Teroy Gaudin, 24, of Piedmont, and Ben Osborne, 24, of Rapid City, were charged. The Ford van and $557 in cash were seized and are pending forfeiture.
Following are injury accidents in the region Thursday and early Friday reported by the Highway Patrol.
* At 3:53 p.m. Thursday, Roger Martin Street, 34, of LaHabra, Calif., was traveling west on Interstate 90 one mile west of Rapid City at a high rate of speed on a 2007 Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The bike went into a high-speed wobble and went down on the roadway. Street was not wearing a helmet and was taken by ambulance to Rapid City Regional Hospital where he was listed in critical condition Friday.
* At 1:15 p.m. Thursday, Mitchell Broderson, 38, of East Peoria, Ill., was traveling south on U.S. 385 south of Deadwood on a 1994 Harley-Davidson when he left the roadway and entered the west ditch. Broderson was thrown from the motorcycle and suffered life-threatening injuries. He was airlifted to Rapid City Regional Hospital where he was listed in fair condition on Friday. He was not wearing a helmet.
* At 1:54 p.m. Thursday, a 2007 Harley-Davidson ridden by Edward Thweatt, 68, of Rathdrum, Idaho, collided with a 2007 Harley-Davidson ridden by Edward Church, 55, of Cedarville, Ohio, on U.S. Highway 385 south of Deadwood. Thweatt had pulled to the side of the road when Church lost control of his motorcycle and collided with Thweatt, according to the Highway Patrol. Thweatt was wearing a helmet and was not injured. Church was not wearing a helmet and suffered a head injury. He was listed in fair condition on Friday.
* At 2:40 p.m. Thursday, Dennis Brooks, 46, of Canyon, Texas, was northbound on U.S. Highway 85 south of Lead when his 2000 Harley-Davidson left the roadway and went down an embankment. Brooks was transported to the Deadwood-Lead Hospital with serious injuries. He was not wearing a helmet. He was listed in fair condition on Friday.
* At 7:10 a.m. Thursday, Guy Krugjohn, 55, of Rapid City made a left-hand turn across S.D. Highway 79 from the Rapid City Landfill in a 2002 Dodge pickup. Brian Walzel, 53, of Centennial, Colo., was riding a motorcycle south on S.D. 79 and struck the pickup. Walzel suffered nonlife-threatening injuries and was taken to Rapid City Regional Hospital by ambulance. He was wearing a helmet. Krugjohn was cited for a stop sign violation.
* At 2:40 p.m. Thursday, on U.S. Highway 14A just east of Deadwood, Ross Ortman, 44, of Sioux Falls, was attempting to turn left onto Shirt Tail Road on his Harley-Davidson motorcycle when he was struck by a 2006 Victory motorcycle ridden by Tom Vipond, 49, of Brighton, Colo. Neither rider was wearing a helmet. Both were treated for nonlife-threatening injuries.
* At 4:19 p.m. Thursday, Gary Lietz, 55, of Naperville, Ill., was slowing for a turn eight miles east of Deadwood on U.S. Highway 14A and lost control of his 2002 Harley-Davidson. Lietz was not wearing a helmet and was treated for nonlife-threatening injuries at Sturgis Regional Hospital.
* At 6:10 p.m. Thursday, James Wollan, 55, of Watertown, was riding a 2001 Harley-Davidson on U.S. Highway 385 six miles south of Nemo Road when he collided with a deer. He was treated for minor injuries. He was not wearing a helmet.
* At 6:44 p.m. Thursday, Yuellanda Martinez, 44, of Phoenix, was traveling west on I-90 east of Sturgis when she lost control of her 2004 Harley-Davidson. She was not wearing a helmet and was treated for minor injuries.
* At 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Frank Pollack, 39, of Steger, Ill., and David Lindsey, 64, of Mesa, Ariz., were traveling east on U.S. Highway 16 near Rockerville. Both drivers failed to negotiate a curve and lost control. The 1999 Harley-Davidson Pollack was riding and the 1997 Harley-Davidson Lindsey was riding entered the median and went down. Neither driver was wearing a helmet and both were arrested for DUI. Speed was also a factor in the crash. Both were taken by ambulance to Rapid City Regional Hospital.
* At 8:35 p.m. Thursday, Sara Patterson, 21, of Bismarck, N.D., was driving a 1998 GMC Jimmy west on S.D. Highway 34 near the Buffalo Chip campground when she collided with a 1983 Harley-Davidson driven by Brandt Wettestad, 19, of Watertown. Patterson was turning onto 131st Avenue and failed to yield to Wettestad, according to the Highway Patrol. Wettestad was not wearing a helmet and was airlifted to Rapid City Regional Hospital. He was subsequently discharged. A passenger on Wettestad's motorcycle, Sarah Peterson, 16, of Rapid City, also was injured. She was still awaiting assessment at Rapid City Regional Hospital on Friday, according to a hospital spokeswoman. A third motorcycle, driven by Ryan Larsen, was involved in the collision, but Larsen was not injured. Patterson was cited for failure to yield, according to the Highway Patrol.
* At 1 a.m. Friday, Daniel Dial, 39, of Cheyenne, Wyo., was traveling west on a 2006 Harley-Davidson motorcycle in the right-hand lane of U.S. Highway 16 at Rockerville. He made a left-hand turn from the right lane in front of a 2007 Harley-Davidson ridden by Jeffrey Dean Jacobs of Reno, Nev., as Jacobs was passing in the left lane. The motorcycles collided and went down on the roadway. Jacobs, Dial and Dial's passenger, Marsha L. Dial, 40, of Cheyenne, were taken by ambulance to Rapid City Regional Hospital. All three were discharged from the hospital. None of them was wearing a helmet.
* At 1:13 a.m. Friday, a Whitewood Police vehicle was attempting a turn-around in the I-90 crossover just east of the Whitewood exit when it was struck by a 2007 Victory motorcycle ridden by Glade Ririe, 42, of Pocatello, Idaho. Ririe suffered minor injuries. A passenger on the motorcycle, Annette Eastvold, 42, of Pocatello, was taken by ambulance to the Spearfish hospital. The Whitewood officer, who was not identified, was not injured.
