RAPID CITY -- There’s a new name in architecture, but it’s not a new company. The partners at enVision Design announced they have changed the name of their company to FourFront Design.

The name reflects the four types of business in which the company is involved: architecture, engineering, geographic information systems and surveying. “And we want to be out in the forefront ... we are the leader,” said partner Fred Thurston.

enVision was created Jan. 1, 2006, when the Alliance of Architects and Engineers merged with Thurston Design Group. More recently, the companies completed their merger when they moved into the same building.

Their offices are located in the newly restored historic Swander Grocery building at 517 Seventh St.

The firm’s partners restored the 102-year-old building using Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design standards developed by the U.S. Green Building Council. The building, they say, is a showcase for historic preservation and environmental sustainability.

The name change, Thurston said, was timed to coincide with the new offices.

enVision took heat for the high bids on the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center expansion, but Thurston said the name change is not related to the bad publicity. He said the main reason is that the Envision Design name has already been copyrighted by an East Coast architecture firm.

In fact, there are at least three other companies, one in Washington, D.C., and two in California that have the Envision Design name.

The partners hired the Rapid City advertising firm Hot Pink Ink to help come up with a new name -- one that’s not taken by other architecture firms -- and a new logo.

FourFront Design plans a Sept. 27 opening at the new offices.
