Institute offers free eye screening

RAPID CITY -- The Black Hills Regional Eye Institute will offer a free children's eye screening from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 5, at 2800 Third St., off Fairmont Boulevard. The eye screening is for children ages 3, 4 and 5, and may help to detect any vision problems that might develop in young children. The institute has provided screenings for several years. Dentist participates in Give Back A Smile

RAPID CITY -- Dentist Kelly Lytle of Rapid City will participate in Give Back A Smile (GBAS) program -- an anti-domestic violence program founded in 1999 by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD).

The program provides cosmetic dental care to survivors of domestic violence through a nationwide network of dentists. Ultradent and Discus Dental donate whitening kits to volunteer dentists, who provide whitening treatments to their patients for a donation to GBAS.

Patients who undergo whitening treatments as part of this program will make their payment directly to the "Give Back A Smile" program. The program has helped more than 550 domestic abuse cases for a total value of $4.3 million.

There are currently 300 applicants being treated throughout the nation. Lytle is a GBAS volunteer dentist and whitening program provider in the Rapid City area. To participate, call Lytle's office at 342-0989.

Better Breathers Club discusses exercises

RAPID CITY - The Better Breathers Club will meet at 1:30 p.m. today, Oct. 1, at Rapid City Regional Hospital's Rushmore Room. Kathy Styles, respiratory therapist at Rapid City Regional Hospital, will present "Exercises You Can Do From Home."

The group provides community support to people with chronic lung diseases such as asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis or bronchiectasis. A monthly program with up-to-date information is provided by a guest speaker. Family members and guests are welcome. Those needing help walking to the meeting room should stop at the information desk for assistance. Visitors also can use the hospital's free valet parking.

Medical clinics move to new offices

RAPID CITY - Earlier this month, Regional Medical Clinic-Endocrinology (RMC-E) and Diabetes Education (DE), formerly located at 677 Flormann St., moved to new offices at 3501 Fifth St. Those moving include Dr. Rachel Edelen, pediatric endocrinologist; Dr. Stephen Haas, endocrinologist; Dr. Thomas Hanson, endocrinologist; Emily Traub and Michelle Wasson, physician assistants; and the DE staff.

Clinical focuses include diabetes, thyroid disease, adrenal dysfunction, reproduction, bone/mineral/metabolism, growth disorders, pediatric endocrinology and juvenile diabetes. Suicide prevention workshop offered

RAPID CITY -- The South Dakota Suicide Awareness Partnership project will host free suicide alertness trainings in Rapid City. The project will introduce programs in 25 South Dakota secondary schools and two universities this fall.

SafeTALK, a three-hour community training course in suicide prevention, will run from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays, Oct. 13 and Nov. 3. The free training will take place at the United Way building, 621 Sixth St. Class size is limited to 30 people per session. Pre-registration is required. Free mental health screening Oct. 11

RAPID CITY -- Chrysalis, a therapists association, will host a free mental health screening as part of National Depression Screening Day on Oct. 11.

For those feeling consistently moody, sad, unable to concentrate, eat, sleep or relax as well as troubled by unexplained aches and pains, the screening will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, at 3601 Canyon Lake Drive. For information, call Dr. William Moss or Linda Holcomb at 341-8647.
