PIERRE -- Circuit Judge James W. Anderson of Pierre has announced that he will retire Feb. 1.
The native of Philip was appointed as a judge by former Gov. Bill Janklow in 1981.
Anderson, 62, graduated from the University of South Dakota in 1967 and got his law degree at USD in 1974. In between, he joined the U.S. Marines and did a 13-month tour of duty in Vietnam.
Asked what he's going to do after he leaves the judgeship, Anderson had a simple response: "Retire."
The vacancy in the Sixth Judicial Circuit will be filled by Gov. Mike Rounds after getting a list of preferred applicants from the Judicial Qualifications Commission.
