ABERDEEN - Police in Aberdeen answered more than 12,000 calls last year, and the No. 1 complaint was about animals.

More than one-fifth of all police calls involved animals, or some 2,567 calls.

Traffic accidents, at 1,947 calls, came in second; 911 hang-ups were third, at 922 calls.

"In general, with animal-related calls, we are called upon a lot," said Police Capt. Dave McNeil. "Some of the calls revolve around neighbor disputes where one neighbor doesn't think another neighbor's pets are being properly cared for, and a lot of them have to do with an animal making noise or a dog running at large." The traffic accidents resulted in 162 injuries and two fatalities.

"We always see a high number of traffic accidents," McNeil said. "Unfortunately, accidents are something that occur at all hours of the day and any day of the week. We'd like to reduce that number, but at the same time I understand that when the human element is involved, that can be hard."

If you don't see your comment, perhaps...

  • you called someone an idiot, a racist, a dope, a moron, etc. Please, no name-calling or profanity (or veiled profanity -- #$%^&*).
  • you rambled, failed to stay on topic or exhibited troll-like behavior intended to hijack the discussion at hand.
  • YOU SHOUTED YOUR COMMENT IN ALL CAPS. This is hard to read and annoys readers.
  • you named a business or identified a business in a way good or bad. Contact the business directly with your customer service concerns or your praise – they’ll likely appreciate your feedback.
  • you believe the newspaper's coverage is unfair. It would be better to write Jerry Steinley at jerry.steinley@rapidcityjournal.com or call him at 394-8427. This is a forum for community discussion, not for media criticism. We'd rather address your concerns directly.
  • you included an e-mail address or phone number, pretended to be someone you aren't or offered a comment that makes no sense.
  • you accused someone of a crime or assigned guilt or punishment to someone suspected of a crime.
  • your comment is in really poor taste.
