GILLETTE, Wyo. — The World of Outlaws Sprint Car tour is coming to Gillette Thunder Speedway during the 2008 season.

The recently announced Outlaws sprint tour schedule lists Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008 for the series’ first-ever stop at the 3/8ths mile oval east of Gillette.

“It will be a privilege to have them. I hope we can accommodate them,” said Thunder Speedway manager Ed Kirchoff of Gillette. “This is something Gillette’s always wanted to have.”

Shane Liebig of Rapid City was instrumental in getting Gillette a date on the WoO schedule and will promote the race, Kirchoff said.

Liebig promoted World of Outlaws stops at Rapid City’s Black Hills Speedway in 2006 and 2007.

The Gillette date comes on the heels of sprint car racing’s biggest week, the Knoxville Nationals at Knoxville Raceway in Iowa on Aug. 6-9. The tour heads west after Knoxville to Gillette, Minot, N.D. and then west to Skagit Speedway in Washington State.

Thunder Speedway does not run a weekly sprint car division, but has hosted the American Sprint Car Series Rocky Mountain Region 360 sprint car tour several times.

A fireworks display is also set for the night, with support races to be determined, Kirchoff said.
