SPEARFISH — In a match-up of undefeated women's basketball teams, Southwest Minnesota State held off a late Black Hills State rally, edging the Lady Yellow Jackets 61-58 in a non-conference game on Monday evening at the Young Center.

The visitors from Marshall, Minn. completed their two-game road trip with a sweep. The Mustangs downed Chadron State College 72-54 on Saturday in Chadron, Neb.

BHSU, fresh off two wins over Midland Lutheran and Mid-America Nazarene in the Midland Lutheran tournament last weekend, was playing its third game in four days. The Lady Jackets arrived back in Spearfish in the early hours of the morning on Sunday.

Fatigue was obviously a factor in Monday's contest.

Black Hills State converted only 4-of-12 3-point attempts and 18-of-32 free throws in the contest. The Lady Jackets averaged 16 3-point shot attempts in their initial six wins of the season.

"We missed layups. We missed free throws," said Black Hills State head coach Mark Nore. It's not for lack of effort."

Back-to-back baskets by Brittany Fuhrman and Janna Schriber pulled BH to within 60-58 with 56 seconds left. The hosts had a chance to take the lead, but Fuhrman misfired on a 3-point attempt.

On the ensuing possession, Megan Stadler, a freshman from Sioux Falls, missed the front end of a one-and-one. However, Sara Leidall grabbed the rebound. Southwest State was fouled, and Liz Grider drained the first charity shot, but missed the second. Bayley Chevron missed a desperation 3-point attempt in the closing seconds.

"Physically giving up those rebounds was not us," said Nore. "We haven't given up big rebounds down the stretch all year.

"They (SMSU) did a good job shutting us down on the threes. "They are a bigger team than we are used to playing."

Grider tallied a game-high 18 points for the Mustangs. Heide Kimmes tossed in 10 points.

A trio of players recorded double-digit point production for Black Hills State. Lacey Haughian led the way with 12 markers, in spite of connecting on only 2-of-12 shot attempts. Snjezana Dojcinovic and Fuhrman netted 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The lead changed hands six times in the early minutes of the game. The NCAA Division II Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference team took the lead at 10-7. The Mustangs owned a 31-27 halftime advantage.

"For our post players, it was a great game to learn from," said Nore. "Some of the teams we see are big. This team was big and athletic. They got us on some back cuts. The ball bounces a few different ways, we get a rebound, and hit our free throws, it's a different game."
