RAPID CITY — Dana College held on for an 82-77 win over Black Hills State during men’s college basketball action at the U.S. Bank Thanksgiving Classic on Friday at Goodell Gymnasium.

The Vikings led 26-23 with 6-1/2 minutes left in the first half before going on a big run to take a 45-29 lead at halftime.

“I was real pleased,” Dana head coach Chris Fear said. “I thought we played very hard.

“It was kind of a tale of two halves. We were very good in the first half and, quite honestly, I thought we were OK in the second half, but Black Hills just really did a great job.”

Black Hills head coach Paul Sather said turnovers plagued his squad in the opening 20 minutes.

“We had 12 turnovers in the first half … you can’t give a team that many more shots than what you had,” he added. “We’re shooting 50 percent, they’re shooting 56, we’re down 16 and we have 12 turnovers (at halftime). That’s the biggest deal.”

Eric Maassen had back-to-back post buckets early in the second half as Dana opened up a 20-point lead — 51-31 — with 16:56 remaining in the game.

The Vikings held a 20-point lead on two other occasions, the latter being a 62-42 edge with 12:57 left.

BHSU narrowed the gap 10 points — 62-52 — over the next 3 minutes on the strength of two Corey Doolan three pointers and a pair of post buckets by Will John Johnson.

The Yellow Jackets got within single digits in the final two minutes. Randy Herman had a put back with 1:52 to go and Spencer Childress buried a trey at the 1:32-mark to pull BHSU within 74-68.

The free-throw line was not kind to the Vikings down the stretch, but they made enough to get the job done.

BHSU got as close as five following a 3 by Forrest Dorr with 29.3 seconds left, but Dana’s A.J. Arkfeld and Trent Mumma combined to go 3-for-4 from the charity stripe over the final 29.3 seconds to seal it.

“They made a bunch of 3s in the second half, and everything that you need to kind of do to come back, to their credit, they did,” Fear added. “But, we made some plays and just enough free throws — it wasn’t quite what I wanted — but just enough to hold them off. We’re happy to get out of here with a win.”

Maassen scored 10 of his 17 points in the second half for the Vikings. Mumma added 17 points and eight rebounds, Trent Albers had 15 points and Zach Genant notched 11 markers.

Black Hills State got a team-high 19 points from true freshman Cain Atkinson, who went 7-for-17 from the floor in his first start of the season. Childress (11 points) and Johnson (10) also reached double figures.

Black Hills State (3-4) takes on Johnson & Wales at 3 p.m. and Dana College (5-4) plays host South Dakota School of Mines at 5 p.m. as the U.S. Bank Thanksgiving Classic concludes today at Goodell Gymnasium.
