This weekend, the Cherry Street Players will be remounting Mikal Kraklio’s “A Dickens of a Christmas” at the Fine Arts Building at the Central States Fairgrounds.

The show marks the end of the semester for the Cherry Street Players, and will also mark Kraklio’s final show as director. (See related story.)

“It’s an original piece that I wrote,” Kraklio said. “It was first performed in 2001. We’ve revamped it, added and changed the music and it’s much bigger.”

The show has a cast of 40 and centers around a group of high school students who are putting on “A Christmas Carol.”  The high school students aren’t letting the younger kids in on the show. As a result, the younger kids decide to sabotage the production.

The various attempts at sabotage include falling scenery and itching powder.

“Definitely bring the kids,” Kraklio said. “The show is only about an hour long and it’s full of your favorite holiday characters — even the Easter Bunny and Winnie the Pooh make appearances.”

Kraklio said he hopes the community comes out for the weekend to see what the program provides. He also suggests that people who are interested in enrolling their children in the Cherry Street Plays come to the show to “check it out.”

“The program teaches more than just theater,” Kraklio said. “The kids learn ethics, morality and teamwork. It’s just a great tool for kids to expand their horizons.”

Auditions for next semester’s troupe will be in February. Children ages 9 to 17 are eligible for enrollment and the group meets regularly throughout the semester. The program is tuition-based.
