Rapid City Invitational: Grapplers from four states collide

RAPID CITY — It’s purely coincidental that Philip wrestler Lincoln Smith has the same first name as a more well-known home-town grappler.
Smith doesn’t mind the comparison.
“You have to look up to Lincoln McIlravy, said Smith, a 189-pounder wrestling for the Scotties at this weekend’s Rapid City Invitational.
Smith can also rattle off the main points of McIlravy’s impressive resume. “He’s a five-time state champion, three-time NCAA champion and an Olympian,” he noted.
Philip’s latest Lincoln won’t approach McIlravy’s numbers, but Smith’s accomplishments are also worthy of note.
Smith qualified for the state Class B tournament the last three years, but he didn’t place until last year as a junior, when he won the 189 state title with a 7-2 win over Marcus Murphy of Dell Rapids.
Smith isn’t resting on those laurels, and being a returning state champion hasn’t really put a target on his back.
“It’s a new year, and everybody’s different,” he said. “People may know who you are a little more, but that’s about all.”
“You can’t look ahead,” he said. “If you do, that’s when someone will sneak up on you and get you.”
He started this year 4-0, winning the 189-pound title at last weekend’s Stanley County Invitational in Fort Pierre. Smith was one of three champions at the season-opening tournament, helping the Scotties claim the team title over Gregory-Burke.
Smith won all four of his matches there by pins, with three of them coming in under a minute.
“I think this tournament should be a little better test,” Smith said.
After a first-round bye Friday, Smith improved to 6-0, needing just 1:13 to stop Hot Springs’ Derrick Walton, a freshman, then pinned Wade Berry of Winner in 1:01 in the quarterfinals.
He’ll face his toughest challenge in today’s semifinals when he takes on Tyrel Tweeter of Bismarck.
“Every match here is going to be tough,” said Philip coach Matt Donnelly.
“Lincoln’s just a hard worker, a great kid,” Donnelly said. “He’s got a positive attitude in the practice room and does what you tell him to.”
The Scotties are among 24 teams that made up the Invitational field.
Eight-time North Dakota dual tournament champion Bismarck won last weekend’s Mandan Lions tournament and leads Gillette 128-11.5 going into today’s semifinals and championship matches. Bismarck advanced seven wrestlers to the quarterfinals, while Gillette advanced six.
Rapid City Stevens (95) is third, followed by defending Rapid City Invitational champion Sturgis (87) and Huron (85).
Quarfinalists for Rapid City Central are Chad Gibson (189) and Chapman Ham (215). “They’re doing what they’re supposed to do,” said Central coach Lance Pearson.
Central’s Aero Amo (103) and Tanner Spilde (112) both fell in the quarterfinals.
“Working your way through the wrestlelbacks is what this tournament is all about,” Pearson said.
Sturgis advanced four, Seth Lange (119), Josh Keszler (125), Kyle Kopplin (145) and Clint Wilson (160).
“There were some bright spots for some of the younger kids, but there were a lot of matches we had won that we found a way to lose and that concerns me,” said Sturgis coach Steve Keszler. “If you don’t come ready to wrestle at this tournament, you’re in for some tough times.”
Kramer Johnson (140) Morgan Russell (112), Kris Klapprodt (135) and Jarrett Jensen (145) advanced for Stevens.
Jarrrick Jensen (103) and Matt Bury (160) both fell in the quarterfinals.
“The goal for those two is fight back and get third,” said Stevens coach Brian Moser. “We could have easily won two more matches and been in second.”
Semifinalists for Belle Fourche are Brian Schultz (171) and Kyle Blake (215). Jamin Battles of Spearfish advanced at 112, along with Brady Harkless of Hot Springs at 125.
Today’s amended schedule starts at 9 a.m. with fourth-round wrestlebacks. Semifinals matches and fifth-round wrestlebacks are set to begin at approximately 11 a.m., with sixth-round wrestlebacks set at 2 p.m.
Championship matches are set for 3 p.m., or about 30 minutes following sixth-round wrestlebacks.
