Basketball roundup: McGhee leads Red Cloud to 77-63 win

WINNER — Christian McGhee’s 27 points, four steals and nine assists paced Red Cloud to a 77-63 boys basketball win over Platte-Geddes on Saturday night at the Snowball Classic in Winner.

McGhee’s total included seven makes from 3-point range. The Crusaders struck from beyond the arc 12 times.

Lester Gotheridge added 13 points and led Red Cloud on the boards with 15 rebounds.

A 16-6 Red Cloud to start the third quarter broke the game open. The Crusaders’ largest lead was 64-53 in the fourth quarter.

Keith Cutler led Platte-Geddes with 26 points, including 11-of-12 from the free-throw line.

Thad Campbell added 12, with Jordan Johnson and Colin Ringling each tossing in

11 for the Black Panthers.

Platte-Geddes, 3-2, was fourth-ranked in Class A, but suffered its second consecutive loss. The Black Panthers bowed to Sioux Falls Christian in a two-overtime game earlier in the week.

Madison 54, St. Thomas More 49

HURON — The Madison Bulldogs knocked off the No. 1-ranked St. Thomas More Cavaliers 54-49 in a non-conference boys basketball game Saturday.

“We just dug ourselves too big of a hole,” More head coach Dave Hollenbeck said of the 26-13 halftime deficit his team faced. “We came out and played hard in the second half and got back into it but it was a little too late. Madison is a very good team. We really struggled with their size.”

Tony Fiegen led Madison with 23 points. Chad White added 12 in his second game back from a knee injury suffered this summer.

Tanner Wince hit six 3-pointers to lead St. Thomas More with 22 points.

Todd County 84, Bennett County 34

MARTIN — Jordan His Law’s 19 points paced Todd County to an 84-34 boys basketball win over Bennett County Saturday night in Martin. Also in double-figures for Todd County was Alex Prue with 15 points, Cancu One Star with 14 and Mark DuBray had 10.

Clint Sasse had 11 to lead Bennett County.

Wall 82, Edgemont 43

WALL — Good shooting and stout defense helped Wall jump to an early lead en route to an 82-43 win over Edgemont in boys basketball Saturday night. The game was a make-up of a game originally scheduled for Friday, Dec. 21.

Sid Geigle led the way for Wall with 24 points.

Edgemont was led by Josh Barker’s 22 points and seven rebounds.

Winner 67, Pine Ridge 58

WINNER — The Winner Warriors beat up on the Pine Ridge Thorpes on the boards to grab a 67-58 win at the Snowball Classic on Saturday.

The Warriors (3-2) held a 35-18 edge on the boards with Seth Daughters’ 19 points and 13 rebounds leading the way. Freshman forward Zach Horstman also scored 19 points for Winner.

“A key to the game was rebounding,” Winner head coach Jim Drake said. “We had a 2-to-1 edge in rebounds and that was key.”

Ezra Zephier led the Thorpes with 16 points.

GIRLS GAMESMURDO — White Lake placed four players in double figures en route to a 62-46 girls basketball win over Jones County on Saturday.

White Lake 62, Jones County 46

Lacey Kristensen led with 14 points, Kendra Hanten added 13, Sara Konechne 12 and Jill Guericke 9 for the Wolverines.

White Lake trailed by four at the end of the first quarter, led by one at the break and pulled away in the second half.

Personal fouls set the tone for the contest, said Jones County coach Neil Krogman. The Coyotes were whistled 26 times and White Lake went to the line 45 times, converting on 29 attempts. Jones County was 3-4 from the stripe.

Jones County was led by Mary Volmer’s 16 points and 6 rebounds. Mariah Krogman added 13 points.

Miller Area 53, Winner 40

WINNER — The Miller Area girls basketball team got 31 points from Amanda Mentzer (18) and Phylicia Hoffman (13) to beat Winner in the Snowball Classic on Saturday.

“We played a bad first half,” Winner head coach Ross Peterson said. “We shot a horrible percentage in the first half. We played better in the second half, but we were down 20 points.”

Winner shot just 27 percent for the game from the field. Megan Phillips led the Warriors with 12 points.

Red Cloud 64, Platte-Geddes 57

WINNER — Marque Lunderman scored 28 points to lead the Red Cloud Crusaders to a 64-57 win over Platte-Geddes in the Snowball Classic on Saturday.

The Red Cloud junior made 16 trips to the free-throw line in the game and made 11 on her way being the game’s leading scorer. Ida Clarke added 10 points for the Crusaders (6-1). Red Cloud will play Wall at Wall on Saturday.

Kendra Knudsen hit three 3-pointers and scored 15 points to lead Platte-Geddes.

FRIDAY GAME

Takini 46, Tiospaye Topa 39

MOBRIDGE — Takini held off Tiospaye Topa 46-39 in a girls basketball game on Friday night.

Kayla Turning Hawk scored a game-high 15 points for the Lady Skyhawks in the win.  

Trailing 25-13, Tiospaye Topa made a run in the fourth quarter to get back into the game.

Takini (3-4) will take on Little Wound at home on Jan. 4.
