Spearfish Canyon still closed

U.S. Highway 14A through Spearfish Canyon remains closed Saturday morning, Jan. 12, as crews continue working to clear a section of canyon wall considered dangerous because of potential rock slides.

Project director Steve Palmer of the state Department of Transportation said late Friday afternoon that Blackwing Blasting of Divide, Colo., had spent much of the day preparing for another blast meant to dislodge the targeted section of rock near Bridal Veil Falls. But after Friday's blast, the main formation still hung together, Palmer said.

"It's frustrating. We just made another shot, and we still have a bunch of rock hanging up there," Palmer said. "We're not sure exactly what's going on. And it's getting dark, so we can't make a good assessment."

They'll try again Saturday, probably with another blast, Palmer said. But the road is likely to remain closed for most or all of the day.

Traffic still is allowed to reach businesses along the upper section of the canyon, by way of U.S. Highway 85.
