Mens basketball: Jimmies rally late, tip Jackets

FarkSPEARFISH — Jamestown College benefitted from a 15-2 scoring rampage over a four-minute stretch in the closing minutes of the game, rallying for a 68-57 win over Black Hills State in a Dakota Athletic Conference men’s basketball game on Friday evening at the Donald E. Young Center.
The win evened the Jimmies at 1-1 in the DAC. Jamestown improved to 11-6 overall. BHSU dropped to 0-2 in the conference and 8-8 overall.
Jake Holen, the leading scorer in the DAC, netted a team-high 22 points, three points over his scoring average of 19. Jordan Olson canned 13, while Ryan Thompson and Kyle Iverson provided 11 apiece.
Cain Atkinson topped the Yellow Jackets with 22 points.
In a game of streaks, BHSU erased a 48-40 deficit, scoring 10 straight points. Successive three-pointers by Atkinson presented BHSU with a 50-48 edge with 5:02 left in the contest.
The Jimmies tied the score on a basket by Iverson. A three-point play by Olson regained a 53-50 advantage for the visitors. After a two-pointer by Faith freshmen Luke Enos whittled the deficit to one point, Thompson and Holen sank back-to-back three-pointers, giving the North Dakotans a 59-52 lead.
A frustrated BHSU head coach Paul Sather was whistled for two technical fouls and ejected from the game at that point.
“We have to think about the next play,” Sather said. “Tonight, I got caught up in some things. I was a terrible example.”
BHSU held the Jimmies to two points in the opening 10 minutes, claiming a 10-2 lead. However, Thompson connected from beyond the 3-point arc on two consecutive trifectas, and a slam dunk by Iverson knotted the score at 10-10.
The Yellow Jackets went on a 7-0 scoring spurt. Atkinson’s trey upped the BHSU edge to 26-20. A buzzer-beating three-pointer by Holen pulled Jamestown College to within 26-25 at halftime.
“I thought both teams were really sluggish,” Sather said. The Jimmies converted only 32 percent of their shot attempts in the first half. BHSU was even colder, hitting on 30 percent.
“Jamestown is a very talented group.” The Jimmies have three players (Holen, Iverson, Olson) rated in the top 10 in scoring in the DAC.
“We rebounded well,” Sather said. Led by eight caroms by Randy Herman, the Jackets won the battle off the glass 38-35.
“We have to tighten up the ship. In our last four games, we’ve had 24, 13, 27 and 20 turnovers. That’s way too many turnovers.”
Sam Kim returned to the lineup on Friday. A.J. Fodness (mononucleosis) and Forrest Dorr (concussion) sat out the game. Dorr and Fodness are both expected to resume practice on Monday.
BHSU will also be bolstered by the addition of Parker Emerson next week. Emerson is a former 4A Player of the Year in Colorado.
BHSU hosts Valley City State at 6 p.m. today. Jamestown College visits South Dakota School of Mines today.
