SPEARFISH — As former baseball great Yogi Berra once stated, “It was a case of deja vu all over again.”
For the second time in two games, Black Hills State watched the opposing team hit successive 3-pointers, breaking open a tight game en route to a 75-64 win for Valley City State on Saturday at the Young Center.
With the win, the Vikings improved to 3-0 in the Dakota Athletic Conference and 14-3 overall. BHSU, losing its third consecutive game for the initial time this season, slipped to 0-3 in the league and 8-9 overall.
BHSU was within striking distance at 60-56 after Will John Johnson canned a free throw with 5:38 left in the game. The Vikings then provided the daggers that cut the heart out of the comeback bid. Calvin Kraft and Orlando Anderson drained back-to-back trifectas, increasing the difference to 10 points. In Friday night’s loss to Jamestown College, Jimmie players also sank successive treys to widen their lead.
Kraft tallied a team-high 14 points, including four-of-six from beyond the three-point arc. VCSU canned 7-of-11 treys in the second half. Tyler Macomber pumped in 11 points and snared eight caroms for the Vikings. Anderson chipped in 10 points.
Corey Doolan paced the Yellow Jackets with 15 markers. He connected of 3-of-6 3-point attempts in the game. Cain Atkinson added 13 points. He was a sparkling 10-of-11 at the charity stripe.
“When the opportunities arose to make plays, Valley City made more plays than we did,” BHSU coach Paul Sather said. “We didn’t make enough of them.”
The Vikings enjoyed an early 8-3 edge in the contest. Doolan’s three-pointer knotted the score at 15-15. Travis Haney, seeing his most playing time this season, came off the Green and Gold bench and sank a trey, handing BHSU an 18-15 lead. Parfait Nayigihugu followed with a three-point play, and Clay Pottorff connected for two points, as the Jackets’ lead grew to eight points.
Valley City responded by scoring 16 of the game’ next 22 points. Zac Wolff’s basket tied the game at 29-all. An inside hoop by Mark Klingberg gave the Vikings the lead back.
The lead then exchanged hands five times for the rest of the half.
