State Treasurer Vern Larson has a foot-thick binder of names of people who could get some money.
His office has a booth at shows and fairs throughout the state — and the unclaimed property binder has more than 50,000 names.
“About one in every 12 South Dakotans’ name is going to be in here, so the odds are very good at finding your name or a relative’s, so it’s a good deal,” Larson said.
The unclaimed property includes insurance proceeds, stocks, bonds, forgotten deposits and unknown heirs.
Larson said names remain on the list until the cash is claimed. Some names have been on the list since 1976, he said.
Larson’s office also has a Web site, so people can check the list. Go to www.sdtreasurer.com. Click on “unclaimed property.”
