Diabetes group hosts guest speaker

The Black Hills Diabetes Support Group will meet at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, at Rapid City Regional Hospital’s West Auditorium. Brett Forman of The Physical Therapy Center will present “Physical Therapy Interventions for Diabetic Neuropathy.”

This is a self-help group that can provide educational, social and emotional support for people affected by diabetes.

According to a news release, members should realize that there are many ways to treat diabetes and that information that they get from the support group should be reviewed by their health care team before any changes are made in their established treatment plan.

There are no membership fees. Staffed by volunteers, the Black Hills Diabetes Association has been providing services to the Black Hills community for the past 21 years. For information, call at 923-4682.

Sick urged to avoid

visiting the hospitals

People with cold or flu symptoms such as a fever, chills, runny nose, coughing and sneezing are asked not to visit Regional Hospitals and Regional Senior Care facilities as well as the Regional Rehabilitation Institute to safeguard the health of patients and senior care residents. These visitation guidelines are in effect at the Regional Hospitals in Custer, Lead-Deadwood, Rapid City, Spearfish and Sturgis and the Belle Fourche Regional Senior Care and Sunpointe Regional Senior Care, Belle Fourche; Custer Regional Senior Care and Wedgwood Regional Senior Care, Custer; David M. Dorsett Regional Senior Care, Spearfish; Fairmont Grand Regional Senior Care, Rapid City; Golden Ridge Regional Senior Care, Lead; and Sturgis Regional Senior Care, Sturgis.

In addition, Rapid City Regional Hospital is discouraging visitation by children ages 12 and younger at all adult patient care areas, Labor and Delivery (newborn), Pediatrics, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

Dr. James Keegan, Rapid City Regional Hospital vice president of Clinical Quality and Infection Control Medical Director, understands when a friend or family member is hospitalized, or in a senior care facility, wanting to visit them, but a sick visitor can be doing more harm than good.

“At this time of year it is very important we remind those in our communities to refrain from visiting patients and residents unless you are well,” he said.
