A Sturgis man arrested in September for running a marijuana-growing operation at his home received a 30-day jail sentence and probation requiring him to do 200 hours of community service and abide by several other conditions.

Herb Ulrich has already served the 30 days but could face up to 17 years in prison if he violates those conditions.

Ulrich and his wife, Nancy Ulrich, were arrested after a tip from an anonymous citizen led Sturgis police to find at least 15 large marijuana plants and packaged marijuana at the Ulrich home on Vanocker Drive.

Herb Ulrich pleaded guilty to possession of more than 10 pounds of marijuana and possession of a controlled weapon.

In exchange for his plea, Meade County State's Attorney Jesse Sondreal dismissed all charges against Nancy Ulrich and a charge of possession with intent to deliver marijuana against Herb Ulrich.

Sondreal said Nancy Ulrich's urinalysis tested negative for marijuana, and she claimed to have no knowledge of the marijuana growing operation.

Herb Ulrich faced a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison for the possession of marijuana charge and up to two years in prison for the possession of a controlled weapon charge.

Fourth Circuit Judge Jerome Eckrich gave him the 30 days, $1,000 in fines and 200 hours of community service, to be completed within 18 months.

Should he violate probation conditions, he could face up to the maximum on each of the counts he pleaded guilty to, for a total of 17 years in prison.

His probation conditions include completing 200 hours of community service and providing four gift baskets, totaling at least $300 each, for needy families in the Sturgis community.

He also is prohibited from entering any establishment that sells alcohol or associating with any known users of drugs or alcohol.
