A scorecard from the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence gives South Dakota 6 points out of a possible 100 for what it calls commonsense gun restrictions.
The only area in which the state scored points is in making it harder to carry guns in public places.
South Dakota failed in other categories such as curbing firearm trafficking, strengthening background checks, child safety and banning military-style assault weapons.
"We consider it a badge of honor to be ranked that way. I think many South Dakotans would see it the same," said Zach Lautenschlager, communications representative for South Dakota Gun Owners.
The Brady Campaign believes gun protection laws are crossing the line, said Brian Malte, state legislative director for the Brady Campaign.
The Campaign hopes the scorecard reveals weaknesses in gun restrictions and motivates legislators and residents to make improvements, he said.
