Sally Roesch Wagner, a native of Aberdeen and editor of the “Daughter of Dakota” book series, will celebrate International Women’s Day in Rapid City with a presentation on “Rescuing Matilda from the Outtakes of History” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 8, in the Wells Fargo Theater at The Journey Museum, 222 New York St.
The free event is sponsored by Gather the Women and is open to the public.
Wagner tells the story of how feminist Matilda Joslyn Gage, who was considered equally important with Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton during her lifetime, got written out of history and the Herculean task to bring her back to her rightful place. All four of Gage’s children moved to Dakota, and she often visited, taking part in the woman suffrage campaigns of 1883 and 1890.
Wagner is one of the first women to receive a doctorate for work in women’s studies in the United States and is also a founder of one of the country’s first women’s studies programs at California State University, Sacramento (1970). A women’s studies professor for 36 years, she is adjunct faculty in the honors program at Syracuse University and executive director of the Gage Foundation in Fayetteville, N.Y. Wagner is the nation’s foremost authority on Matilda Joslyn Gage.
Wagner will sign copies of her books at the conclusion of the talk. For more information, call 415-1554.
