A familiar face was on an unfamiliar sideline for some area fans, as former Hot Springs volleyball coach Dennis Northrup is an assistant on Dawn Seiler’s staff at Aberdeen Central.

“Everything’s going well,” Northrup said. “We miss the Hills and the people we grew to know, but it was a good opportunity for us.”

Northrup and his wife, Kelly, were longtime teachers and coaches in Hot Springs, and both were instrumental in building a powerful volleyball program. But Kelly was offered a job as a principal in the Aberdeen middle school system, resulting in a move this year.

Dennis is coaching and teaching history at the high school. He is expected to take over the head coaching position for the volleyball team next season.

The Northrup’s son, Riley, is still attending Chadron State College, where he’s a standout high jumper.

“We don’t get to see Riley as much as we’d like, but he’s doing well,” Dennis said. “We’re hoping he’s going to come up for some of the tournament so we can see him.”

- Brookings junior point guard Courtney Higgins is playing the tournament with a torn MCL in her knee. The injury has limited her explosiveness, but she is determined to play according to coach Lynn Frederick.

- Pierre’s fan section was the largest and loudest of the first day. That may have had something to do with their team playing in the last game of the day, but the civic center provided the Lady Govs more of a homecourt advantage on the opening day than it did any other squad.

- Rapid City Central was 0-9 from the field to start their first-round game against Aberdeen Central.

- Rapid City Central’s Jacqee Jasinski was diagnosed with strep throat this week, and Aberdeen central coach Dawn Seiler is recovering from Mononucleosis.

- Among the referees being honored for 25 years of service is Jim Phillips, a Deadwood elementary school teacher. The award might be a little late, as according to the AA tournament program, Phillips started officiating basketball in 1969 and football in 1970. Also being honored are Curtis D. Guindon of Plankinton, Ron Determan of Burke and Tim McCain of Artesian.

- Douglas High School’s pep band provided music for the first day of the tournament.
