Softball: BHSU, Jamestown split a pair games

FarkSPEARFISH — Black Hills State and Jamestown College opened the Dakota Athletic Conference women’s softball season, splitting a doubleheader at Cecil Hurley Field on Friday.
The Lady Yellow Jackets collected a 10-3 triumph in the first game.
Jamestown College withstood a last-inning BHSU rally, edging the hosts 10-9 in the second game.
In the first game, Jessica Clark, the winning pitcher, limited the Jimmies to one hit in a 10-3 win by BHSU.
The Jimmies took a short-lived 1-0 lead, plating one run in their initial at-bat. BHSU responded with a five-run uprising in the home half of the second inning. The Lady Jackets added one run in the fifth and four in the sixth.
BHSU pounded out a total of 15 hits in the win. Kim Flaman and Krista Gleiforst each contributed three hits in four plate appearances. Clark was two-for-four at the plate. Danielle McGrath blasted a four-bagger and crossed home plate twice for the victors.
Justin Rechenmacher, the losing pitcher, was roughed up for five runs and six hits in one and one-third innings. Kate Street relieved Rechenmacher for the final 4 2/3 innings.
“We were solid in the first game,” BHSU coach Amy Gurney said. “Offensively, we supported Clark.”
In the second game, Jamestown College earned a 10-9 win.
The Jimmies appeared to be on the verge of ending the game by the eight-run rule, holding a 9-1 lead into the bottom half of the fifth inning.
Led by a three-run, over-the-fence home run by Clark, the Lady Jackets rallied to within 9-6.
Jamestown plated what would prove to be the game-deciding run in the top of the seventh. BHSU sliced the deficit to 10-9 in the bottom of the seventh, but left the potential tying run on second base when the final batter grounded out.
The Jimmies totaled 20 hits. Rechenmacher was four-for five. Jen Penner, Amy Shadinger and Teela Nelson had three hits apiece. Rechenmacher was the winning hurler in relief of starter Street.
Karissa Norte was the starting pitcher for BHSU. Norte was relieved by Ashley Grose and Clark.
Pacing the 17-hit attack for BHSU was Kelli Graham with three hits in five at-bats Heidi Kwilinski, Flaman, Clark and McGrath chipped in two hits each.
“It was a completely different outing in the second game. We struggled defensively in the first three innings,” Gurney said. “Jamestown is a good hitting team. We were able to come back on them after we were down.”
Jamestown was coming off a road trip to Tucson, Ariz., in which the Jimmies won 11-of-14 games.
BHSU (2-6 overall) is tentatively scheduled to host Jamestown College in a doubleheader today at noon and 2 p.m.
