Businessman Craig Kirsch has announced his candidacy for the Rapid City Council in Ward 1.

Kirsch has lived in Ward 1 for 25 years, and he owned and operated Two Wheeler Dealer Cycle & Fitness stores in Rapid City and Spearfish. He sold those businesses in 2007 and currently is a partner in a Sioux Falls Two Wheeler Dealer location and also operates commercial rental properties in the Black Hills.

Kirsch and his wife, Trish, have been married 17 years and have six children. Kirsch earned a business degree from Black Hills State University. He is an avid outdoorsman who enjoys hunting, bicycling and camping.

As a businessman for more than two decades, Kirsch said, he knows the importance of the bottom line and believes his business background and knowledge of the city and Ward 1 will allow him to effectively serve taxpayers. He said he advocates fiscal responsibility and limited government.

"I believe that city government should be run like a business, and that's the perspective I'll bring to the position," he said. "I'm willing to take the time to learn about the issues, and I look forward to listening to the concerns of the citizens of Ward 1. I'll do my best to bring a fresh voice and perspective to the process."

Name-calling, crude language and personal abuse are not welcome. Moderators will monitor comments with an eye toward maintaining a high level of civility in this forum. Our comment policy explains the rules of the road for registered commenters.

If you don't see your comment, perhaps...

  • you called someone an idiot, a racist, a dope, a moron, etc. Please, no name-calling or profanity (or veiled profanity -- #$%^&*).
  • you rambled, failed to stay on topic or exhibited troll-like behavior intended to hijack the discussion at hand.
  • YOU SHOUTED YOUR COMMENT IN ALL CAPS. This is hard to read and annoys readers.
  • you named a business or identified a business in a way good or bad. Contact the business directly with your customer service concerns or your praise – they’ll likely appreciate your feedback.
  • you believe the newspaper's coverage is unfair. It would be better to write Jerry Steinley at jerry.steinley@rapidcityjournal.com or call him at 394-8427. This is a forum for community discussion, not for media criticism. We'd rather address your concerns directly.
  • you included an e-mail address or phone number, pretended to be someone you aren't or offered a comment that makes no sense.
  • you accused someone of a crime or assigned guilt or punishment to someone suspected of a crime.
  • your comment is in really poor taste.
