SPEARFISH — The meet was called the Black Hills State Frostbite Invitational, but four area collegiate teams warmed up to the challenge at Lyle Hare Stadium on Friday.

“For the most part, things went well,” Dickinson State head coach Pete Stanton said. “We’re really happy with our performances. It was nice to get in back-to-back meets.”

BHSU head coach Scott Walkinshaw added, “Last year, we were still trying to get in our first meet. We’re ahead of where we were last year at this time.”

Dickinson State had a trio of double winners in the men’s division.

Ramon Miller, competing in his first-ever 200-meter dash at the collegiate level, won the event in 21.23 seconds, earning an automatic berth in the NAIA national meet in St. Louis in May. Miller topped the

400-meter runners with a winning time of 48.28.

Joining Miller as double winners for the Blue Hawks were Sergio Jimenez, 800-meter dash, 1:58.12; 3,000-meter
steeplechase, 10:11.83; and Jermaine Christie, 110-meter hurdles, 14:65; long jump, 6.64 meters.

Other Dickinson State event winners were: Michael Sands, 100-meter dash, 10.87; Allan Ayala, 400-meter hurdles, 53.56; 4-by-400-meter relay, 3:19.66; Sheldon King, high jump, 6-6; Dominic Goodman, triple jump, 14.96 meters; Jeremy Herr, javelin throw, 177-3.

Black Hills State had outstanding performances in the throwing events.

Eric Flores, Tyg Long and Jason Boeding swept the top three places in the hammer throw. Boeding and Flores were 1-2 in the discus. Flores was the shot put champion with a throw of 55-1.

“We had some good performances,” Walkinshaw said. “We went one, two three in the hammer throw and had four throwers make the finals in the shot put.

“Cameron Dean had a nice personal record (second place, 55.38) in the 400-meter hurdles. He added, Brett Montieth a freshman from Lead, finished fourth in the 400-meter dash.

Chadron State’s Joe Schultz claimed firsts in the 1,500 (4:12.07) and 3,000 run (8:42.72).

Chandler Caldwell of South Dakota Mines led the pole vaulters with a winning performance of 15 feet, 6 inches. “Chandler gave it several good shots at 16 feet,” Mines coach Jerry Schafer said. “Tyler Flattum ran pretty well in the hurdles.”

Flattum took second place in the 110-meter hurdles race. Rob Hahn managed a runner-up finish in the 1,500-meter run.

Three athletes collected a pair of first-place finishes in the women’s division. Kelsey Aide of DSU won the 200-meter dash (26.15) and pole vault (12 feet). Blue Hawk teammate Chadee Moss captured wins in the long jump (5.26 meters) and triple jump (11.21 meters). Stacy Girard of Chadron State notched firsts in the 1,500-meter run (4:50.54) and 3,000-meter runs (10:28.91).

Aubrey Baxter and Amber Brodersen of BHSU recorded first- and second-place throws of 51-1-1/2 and 45-1-1/4, respectively in the shot put. The Lady Jacket duo reversed their places in the discus with Brodersen placing first (46.05 meters) and Baxter taking second (45.56 meters).

“Our throwers are doing a nice job,” Walkinshaw said. “They have a nice synergy going.”

Shannon Hellman, a junior from Rapid City, earned an automatic trip to the NAIA national meet, negotiating the 100-meter hurdles in a winning time of 13.90, nearly three seconds better than runner-up Leah Sperry of Dickinson State.

Nicki Shinkle, Shelli Sheffler and Marissa Curry of BHSU were the top three finishers in the 400-meter hurdles.

Ashlee Della Silva, competing in her initial collegiate meet, posted a pair of second place finishes in the 100 and 200. Kaila Ivers, Hellman, Della Silva and Shinkle were members of the victorious 1,600-meter relay team.

Lady Yellow Jackets Alicia Verhulst and Jamie Adams took the top two places in the grueling 3,000-meter steeplechase, the first running event of the meet.

Kendra Crisman, a freshman from Rapid City, crossed the finish line in a personal best, winning time of 2:29.15 for South Dakota Mines in the 800.

Coach Schafer noted Ashley Stewart finished third in the high jump and threw a personal best distance (36.49 meters), taking fourth place in the discus competition

Other Dickinson State first place winners included Kyla Wasser, 100, 12.31; Rachel Clark, 400, 1:01.12,  400-meter relay, 49.58; Crystal Eneas, high jump, 5-3; Christa Hofland, hammer throw, 46.37 meters; and Mattie Murphey, javelin throw, 111-5-1/2.

“We’re still getting adjusted to the outside events with the different distances from the indoor season,” Walkinshaw said. “Everybody is still not clicking.”

Dickinson State hosts BHSU, Mines, Minot State, Jamestown College and University of Mary in the Blue Hawk Games next Friday in Dickinson, N.D.
