Mark Kirkeby has announced that he is seeking re-election as a Republican candidate to serve in the State House of Representatives from District 35.
Kirkeby served six years on the Pennington County Commission and was elected in 2006 to the Legislature. He is a lifelong resident of Rapid City and graduated from Central High School and Black Hills State University with a degree in political science.
“I have a passion for serving my neighbors and working to improve our quality of life,” he said. “I believe that I have been a responsible voice in achieving change and results for those who have entrusted me to represent them. I am comfortable that the vast majority of my decisions and votes have been supported by my residents, as I have been consistent with their views and ideas.”
Kirkeby works for The Salvation Army. He and his wife, Sheryl, raised their four children over the past 20 years in the same neighborhood in North Rapid.
Kirkeby has served on the Ellsworth Task Force, Economic Development board, as president of the North Rapid Civic Association and on the Rapid City Chamber of Commerce.
He is a long-term member of the NRA, the Custer Trail Riders, the Buckaroos, and he volunteered for 10 years with the Rushmore Little League.
“I am applying for this job because I believe that my experience in government, my proven track record of performance and my reputation of honesty and integrity serves residents of District 35 well,” he said.
He said his current committee assignments in the Legislature allow him to actively represent his constituents on the local government and on the health and human services committees.
“I have laid the groundwork for some needed change with the funding of education and with our property tax system,” he said. “I will continue to keep government off your back, out of your pockets, and will vote to protect your personal freedoms and property rights.”
