Dale Gunderson of Rapid City has announced he is a candidate in District 33 for the Republican nomination to the state House of Representatives.
Gunderson, a retired Rapid City physician, began his ear, nose and throat practice in Rapid City in 1993. Since his retirement in 2004, he continues to practice as a volunteer physician at Rapid City Community Health Clinic and Children's Care Rehab and Development Center.
"I will be an advocate for public health issues and for available quality health care. When the legislature is working on medical issues, I can provide insight other candidates may not have," Gunderson said.
Gunderson grew up in South Dakota, graduated from Augustana College and taught elementary and high school before serving in the U.S. Army. After discharge, he earned his master's degree at University of South Dakota. He taught at Yankton College before attending and graduating from South Dakota and Southwestern medical schools in Vermillion and Dallas, Texas.
After completing his surgical residency, he practiced in Yankton before practicing and retiring in Rapid City. He is a clinical associate professor at South Dakota School of Medicine.
He said the state must support teachers and provide adequate funding to schools to encourage children to perform at their highest level.
"My experience teaching at most levels of education gives me insight other candidates may not have when the legislature is making decisions on education in South Dakota," he said.
Gunderson is an active member of the South Dakota State Medical Association, a longtime member of the South Dakota State Medical Association's governing Council of Physicians and is past president and past secretary/treasurer of Black Hills Medical Society.
He served in several medical missions to Haiti and Nicaragua.
He enjoys the outdoors, including fishing and turkey hunting. He and his wife, Loretta, enjoy biking on the Mickelson Trail.
Gunderson said he believes the state needs to support its business and labor market and build local economies in order to enable young people to find good-paying, productive and satisfying job opportunities at home.
