Rapid City native to climb Mount Rainier

SAN JOSE, Calif — Rapid City native Emily Tsitrian will face the challenge of a lifetime on September 11. As a part of Backpacker Magazine’s Summit for Someone Program, she will climb the 14,410-foot glaciated volcano in Washington State. On a three-day summit climb, she will don crampons and wield an ice pick as she navigates the peak. But she’s not just doing it for herself — she’s doing it for someone she hasn’t ever met.
Summit for Someone is a nationwide climbing event to benefit the nonprofit organization Big City Mountaineers, a wilderness mentoring group that provides safe and challenging mentoring trips for at-risk, urban teenagers.
Each participant raises enough funds to sponsor an entire group of teenagers for a weeklong camping trip. As a part of these excursions, the teens are provided one-on-one mentoring sessions and are exposed to a wide spectrum of natural landscapes and beauty they have never seen before.
Tsitrian was first exposed to nature through Girl Scout activities in the Badlands and Black Hills, and has since developed a love for backpacking and extended camping trips.
“When I am in nature, I feel a certain kind of peace and hope for myself and the world,” said Tsitrian. “Too many young people today don’t get the opportunity to explore the great outdoors, and develop their sense of wonder for the natural world.”
A graduate of Stevens High School, Tsitrian has already begun fundraising and an intensive training program for the summit of Mt. Rainier. Each week, she will increase the intensity of her workouts and hike with a heavier pack on the weekends.
Currently, she is a full-time student at De Anza Community College in Cupertino, Cailf. She hopes Rapid City residents can donate to her climb.
