Thomas the Tank Engine will be rolling into the Hill City Depot on Friday for a weekend of fun.

Kids and adults alike can take a 25-minute ride behind Thomas, the classic storybook engine, at the 1880 Train Station, and meet Sir Topham Hatt.

Meg Warder, general manager of the 1880 Train, said there will also be storytelling, live music, temporary tattoos, an imagination station, arts and crafts, food vendors and a merchandise tent for Thomas accessories.

At 12:30 p.m. Friday, Hill City Mayor Don Voorhees will sign a petition in an attempt to get Thomas into the National Toy Hall of Fame, in the Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, N.Y.

According to the Strong Museum Web site, the National Toy Hall of Fame recognizes "toys that have inspired creative play and enjoyed popularity over a sustained period." Toys can be nominated to the Hall of Fame, and selections are made by a committee consisting of historians, educators and curators.

Voorhees said when Thomas the Tank Engine came to Hill City last year, the event was a "huge success," and he expects a large turnout for "A Day out with Thomas" this weekend.

"It's a neat event," Voorhees said. "The Black Hills Central Railroad is a big part of our community, and if Thomas the Tank Engine wants to be inducted into the Toy Hall of Fame, that sounds good to me."

Warder said the people in charge of Thomas the Tank Engine are working to get petitions signed and are trying to create as much awareness as they can.

According to the Strong Museum Web site, there are 38 toys in the National Toy Hall of Fame, including Candy Land, Teddy Bear, Slinky, Mr. Potato Head and Barbie. If Thomas is inducted, Warder said she thinks it would recognize him for the impact he has had on families and kids worldwide.

"A Day out with Thomas" takes place at railroads throughout the nation. Warder said Thomas will leave the station starting at 9 a.m. Friday and will run nine times every day, with the last departure at 3:50 p.m. Tickets are $18 at the event.

"A Day out with Thomas" will also take place June 13-15 in Hill City.
