ESPN’s Outside the Lines talks to Hammon
BRISTOL, Conn. — The ESPN show Outside the Lines will examine how 2007 WNBA MVP runner-up Becky Hammon will achieve her goal of playing in the Olympics, but in a way she never expected.
While the Rapid City native says her lifelong dream was to play for her country in the Olympic Games, she says her name was added to USA Basketball’s list of potential Olympic players only as an obligatory gesture when that list was expanded. When she signed a multi-million dollar, four-year contract to play for a Russian club team in the WNBA off-season, she also agreed to take her skills to Beijing on the Russian National team, a decision that has prompted the head coach of Team USA, Anne Donovan, to question her patriotism.
Mark Schwarz will report from Moscow on why an all-American girl from Colorado State University, now a guard with the WNBA’s San Antonio Silver Stars, decided to play for Russia in the 2008 Summer Olympics.
The show airs at 7:30 a.m. MDT on Sunday.

Paulson chosen as top athletic director
DICKINSON, N.D. — The athletic directors of the Dakota Athletic Conference have selected Jamestown College’s Lawrie Paulson as the 2007-08 DAC athletic director of the year.

During the year, the Jimmies shared the conference football title and advanced to the NAIA playoffs for the second straight season, the men’s basketball team won the regular season championship and received an at-large invitation to the national tournament and the baseball team won the Region III tournament and the Plains Super Regional to qualify for their second trip to the World Series.
Kruger named as USD assistant coach
VERMILLION — Ryun Williams, head coach of the University of South Dakota women’s basketball team, has announced the hiring of Allison Kruger as assistant coach. Kruger was an assistant under Williams at Wayne State, Neb., for the past four seasons.
“I’m excited to have Allison join the staff at USD so that we can continue what we started at Wayne State,” said Williams. “She is extremely knowledgeable about the game. Her and I worked well together for the last four years. She is a great recruiter and a great floor coach. Coach Kruger has a very competitive personality and that carries over to the players.”
Kruger comes to South Dakota off the heels of a historic season at WSC. The Wildcats finished the season with a 22-10 record, which included a trip to the NCAA Tournament. In the first round of the North Central Region, WSC pulled off an 85-78 upset of North Dakota for the first win in the NCAA tournament in the school’s history.
