Rodeo: Area cowboys in good position at Crazt Horse

FarkCRAZY HORSE — The day’s fastest time helped propel Ivan Teigen to the lead Saturday.
Teigen, of Camp Crook, turned in a 4.1-second time to take the lead in steer wrestling, heading into today’s final round of the PRCA Crazy Horse Stampede.
About 500 people turned out to watch Teigen edge defending champion Matt Gilbert, also of Camp Crook, on a beautiful 75 degree day just below Crazy Horse Memorial. Heading into the final four competitors, only two riders had posted scores, but that changed when Matt Gilbert posted a fast 4.5-second run to take the lead over New Underwood’s Gary Gilbert, who rode at 5.5.
“I’m happy with how I rode,” Matt Gilbert said. “It was the first rodeo that horse has been too, and I always expect to finish first. I had the ride to do that, but then those other guys came in and had really good rides too. I felt better about my ride before they went.”
Matt Gilbert remained in first place for a few short minutes before Teigen came up and beat his score by four-tenths of a second.
“I felt like I got off a little early, but after looking back on the tape I think my horse just stepped a little bit early,” said Teigen “It was a team effort because Matt and I hazed for each other. I think going into (Sunday) it’s hard to say what’s going to happen. The steers are awfully good, and a lot of it’s left up to which one you draw.”
Jeremy Meeks, who is currently ranked second in the Indian National Rodeo, took the lead in the saddle bronc with a score of 75, riding on Repeat Offender, and Britt Lugar, of Fort Yates, N.D., sits in second with a 72.
In team roping, all but three teams posted no times, either getting out ran by the livestock or were unable to complete the tie. However, the top two teams posted solid times as Shaun Ruland and T.J. Ruland, of Wall, finished second at 5.8 seconds. Lee Olson, of Rapid City, and Paul Tierney, of Oral, head into today’s final day in the lead with a time of 5.5 seconds. Tierney also leads the tie down roping event with a time of 9.2 seconds.
Jodie O’Bryan, of Belvidere, leads a quality field in girls barrel racing, turning in a time of 14.83 seconds, while Martee Pruitt and Shannon Olsen are tied for second at 15 seconds each.
The final round starts today at 2 p.m. at Crazy Horse Memorial.
