Basketball: South Dakota sweeps Nebraska in all-star games

FarkYANKTON — The South Dakota All-Stars held on to stop the Nebraska All-Stars 89-85 at the Cimpl Arena on the Mount Marty College campus in Yankton in a matchup of the boy’s elite squads representing their respective states.
Fittingly Louie Krogman, South Dakota’s all-time leading scorer, led both squads with a game-high 25 points. Krogman played for White River and led them to the State B title this past season and was reunited with his prep coach Eldon Marshall one last time as they shared one final victory on the hardwood together.
Krogman the South Dakota MVP, will attend the University of South Dakota in the fall.
A pair of Eastern South Dakota players, Miller’s Jordan Miller (Southwest State College) and Watertown’s Josh Hanson (Augustana College) added 13 and 11 points respectively for the home state squad.
South Dakota took its biggest lead of the first half, 13-6, on a Krogman jumper with 16:10 left to play.
Nebraska was led by MVP Mike Fox with 18 points; Jake Petersen added 15 and Cody Linder chipped in with 13.
Nebraska built a four-point lead early in the second half before South Dakota gained the lead for good 75-73 on a pair of Skyler Bloch free throws with 5:42 to play.
Red Cloud’s Christian McGhee added nine markers with Yankton’s big man, Colton Iverson, inked to play hoops for the Golden Gophers, scored five points.
St. Thomas More’s Nate Jacobson, who will attend the School Of Mines in the fall to play basketball, scored three points.
Nebraska leads the all-time series 13-7.

YANKTON — The South Dakota All-Stars completed the sweep in a high scoring affair as seven of the nine home state stars scored in double digits to overcome the game-high and series record 31 points scored by Nebraska’s MVP Kaite Birkel.
South Dakota raced out to a 51-42 first half lead and then played the visitors even for the final 20 minutes to secure the win.
Ellyce Youngren led the South Dakota squad with 15 tallies. The former Bobcat from Brookings and future Jackrabbit was five-of-seven from the floor and the free throw line.
Alexis Yackley of Sully Buttes (Iowa State) and game MVP Whitney Licktieg of Dell Rapids (Mount Marty) contributed 13 each with Cami Koehn (Augustana) and Mikayla Barondeau (Northern State) netting 12 each.
Youngren tallied four blocks as South Dakota marked nine swats in the game.
Nebraska holds a 10-9 series lead over South Dakota.
