Metal artists celebrate opening of gallery, guest house

In the five years since Brett and Tammy Prang erected a 38-foot hand-welded metal cross over the family cemetery near Kadoka, the colossal piece has drawn hundreds of visitors and lots of attention.
Now all that attention has inspired the Prangs to open Incredible Metal Guest House & Gallery, which celebrates its grand opening on Saturday.
“We’ve had people coming from all over the world, strictly from word of mouth,” Tammy Prang said. “We’re on our third guest book.”
Many of the folks who found their way to the Frying Pan Ranch and the Pettyjohn family cemetery wanted to see more of the Prangs’ artwork, most of which is of a more modest size.
“Here I am dragging it out of the trailer and showing them,” Tammy said with a chuckle. “This is going to be a lot easier.”
The ranch couple brought in a log cabin, then decided to put it on a walkout basement. The cabin houses the gallery. The basement has become the Incredible Metal Guest House (with décor featuring the owners’ work, of course).
The guesthouse has already drawn quite a few visitors, even though the Prangs are just starting to advertise it.
“It’s kind of a getaway for people to do their own thing,” or for artists seeking solitude to create, Tammy said.
The land has always inspired them. “We live on a creek but the Badlands surround us,” she explained. “The view down here is beautiful, especially with all this green.”
Along with metal work by the Prangs, the gallery has bronze sculptures by John Lopez and Jammie Huggins, pottery by Dakota Stoneware, watercolors by Kathy Sigle and Marion Toillion, watercolor and oils by Lorna Moore, and honey and gifts from Chris and Terry Baldwin of South Beekota. All are from western South Dakota.
Saturday’s celebration will also be a homegrown affair. Tammy said Rapid City artist/musician James Van Nuys will play, and local authors will be signing their books on the Badlands territory. Cowboy poetry, door prizes and refreshments are planned.
Tammy said they might even have some rope spinners perform, “if they’re not too bashful.”
The party starts at 1 p.m., and the public is invited.
Gallery hours are by appointment or chance.
“We ranch for a living, and then we do this art thing too,” Tammy explained.
After all the recent rain, there’s hay to put up, after all.
