GREENSBORO, N.C. — Rapid City Stevens’ Brooke Garner took 11th place in the girls shot put at the Nike Outdoor Nationals on Saturday. Garner, who is headed to South Dakota State in the fall, had a throw of 42 feet, 8 1/4 inches to get 11th place. Cumberland, Maine’s Becky O’Brien won the event with a heave of 52-1-3/4.
Garner won the Class AA discus and shot put championships this year, helping the Raiders to their 13th straight girls’ state team title. Garner won the discus title and was the runner-up in the shot put as a junior in 2007.
Garner’s performance wasn’t the best by a South Dakotan at Nationals, however, as Watertown’s Leslie Brost won the girls’ pole vault at 13 feet, 3 inches — which tied her South Dakota state record. Brost won the Class AA title this spring with a state-meet record vault of 12-10.
Brost, a three-time state pole vault champ, is headed to North Dakota State University in the fall.
