Residents and businesses in South Dakota that suffered flood damages in June will not get federal help. The Federal Emergency Management Agency on Thursday, June 24, denied South Dakota's request for individual disaster recovery help.

"Unfortunately, South Dakota wasn't able to secure federal support for the 35 families whose homes received major damage or were destroyed by the storm. However, we have identified numerous in-state programs to help those who are recovering from the storm," Gov. Mike Rounds said in a news release.

The June 2 storms caused damage in 27 counties and on three Native American reservations. A presidential disaster declaration in July authorized federal agencies to fund up to 75 percent of the costs to repair flood-damaged public facilities in those areas.

People and businesses wanting information about available assistance are asked to contact their local emergency manager or, in the West River area, the Black Hills Area Chapter of the American Red Cross at 888-271-3130.

Affected areas include Aurora, Bon Homme, Brule, Buffalo, Butte, Charles Mix, Clay, Dewey, Douglas, Gregory, Haakon, Hand, Hanson, Hughes, Hutchinson, Jackson, Lawrence, Lyman, McCook, Meade, Mellette, Moody, Perkins, Stanley, Tripp, Turner and Ziebach counties, and the Cheyenne River, Crow Creek, and Lower Brule reservations.
