Baseball: Rain plays havoc on Tubbs Classic

RAPID CITY — Rain proved to be the big winner Thursday at the Marshall Tubbs American Legion baseball classic at Fitzgerald Stadium.
Three games were washed out and a fourth contest was suspended in the fifth inning with the score knotted 3-3.
That game, between Spearfish Post 164 and the Aberdeen Smittys, will resume Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
Wet field conditions forced postponement of the scheduled 5 p.m. game between the Smittys and Monarch High School of Denver, as well as cancellation of the final game between Rapid City Post 22 and Colorado Springs, Colo.
The Aberdeen-Monarch contest is rescheduled for 9:30 a.m. today at Fitzgerald Stadium. The Post 22-Colorado Springs game will not be made up.
Spearfish Post 164 scored all three runs in a four-hit fourth inning. Jordan Johnson, Dustin Wisener and Allen Hemeyer all hit and scored and Ryan Royer also recorded an RBI for Spearfish.
A changed call helped the Smittys tie the game in the fifth as rain threatened.
Matt Kervin and Shane Cunningham scored to make the tally 3-2, then Evan Nolte hit into was originally called an inning-ending play at first.
But, on an Aberdeen appeal, plate umpire Clyde Millslagle ruled Nolte safe because a throw had pulled Spearfish first baseman Rick White off the bag.
Nolte was later waved home from third by Millslagle after another Spearfish throwing error, on a single by Blair Frederickson, bounced into the stands.
“That was a huge call for us,” said Aberdeen assistant coach John Krogstrand. “That made it a suspended game instead of a win for Spearfish.”
