CHADRON, Neb. — Mike Maloney has resigned his position as Chadron State College head women’s basketball coach, CSC athletic director Brad Smith announced on Tuesday.

“Mike has done a good job for us and I’m very sorry to see him leave at this time,” Smith said.

Maloney, who guided the Eagles to a 9-18 overall record and a 6-13 record in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in 2007-08, leaves CSC after one year to become activities director and assistant principal at Rock Springs High School in Wyoming.

In Maloney’s only year as head coach at CSC, he helped the women’s team improve its win total by seven games.

“It was a really tough decision,” Maloney said. “The toughest part of it was making the calls to the girls to tell them that I was pursuing something else.

“Even though I wasn’t here that long, it was a wonderful experience and I’ve enjoyed the community and college thoroughly.”

Maloney, 41, is a native of Gillette and a former all-state basketball player while starring for the Camels.

Prior to coaching at CSC, Maloney was the head coach of the women’s team at Briar Cliff College in Iowa for two years after working as an assistant coach at Wayne State for three years.

His first teaching and coaching position was at his high school alma mater where he coached the freshmen girls’ team two years. From 1993 through ‘96, he coached the girls’ basketball team at Lead-Deadwood High School in South Dakota in the fall and refereed Continental Basketball Association games during the winter. In 1997-98, he moved to Florida, where he refereed college basketball as well as about 20 NBA games.

While Maloney was the assistant women’s coach at Wayne State the Wildcats went 52-29. He led Briar Cliff to a 21-13 and a berth in the final four at the NAIA National Tournament during his first year with the Sioux City, Iowa, team in 2001-02.

The Greybull High School team had won just two games the year before he took over, but played in the state tournament two of his final three years.

Smith said a search for Maloney’s replacement will begin immediately.
