Rounds suggest some teachers get salary bonuses

PIERRE -- Gov. Mike Rounds says it may be necessary for South Dakota school districts to give extra money to teachers in hard-to-fill positions such as math or science.
The idea of higher pay for some teachers than others would fly in the face of K-12 education's long-standing practice of paying teachers largely on a uniform schedule tied to their level of education and length of employment.
Rounds says providing higher pay for those who teach certain subjects may ease the shortage of those teachers and raise the average pay of all teachers.
However, some school administrators worry that such a practice may cause resentment among those who teach other subjects and make smaller salaries.
