CUSTER — The Custer Granite men’s baseball team went 1-1 during competition in the GSHBA regional tournament in Chadron, Neb., on Saturday and Sunday.

The tournament was to determine which team went to Wakefield, Neb., to represent the GSHBA league in the Nebraska state amateur tournament.

Custer beat Rushville, Neb., 5-3, on Saturday and lost to Chadron, 9-0, in a rain-shortened game on Sunday. The game was called in the bottom half of the seventh inning. Chadron will represent the league in Wakefield, Neb., beginning Saturday.

In the Saturday game, Custer’s Casey Finn was the winning pitcher, allowing only five hits, walking three and striking out seven in the nine-inning game. Finn’s record improved to 7-2 with the win. The game was tied 2-2 until the Granite eighth when Custer scored three times to ice the win. Finn, John Spain and JR Krogstad each had two hits. Dave Powers tripled in the first inning to drive in Finn for Custer’s first run. Custer had 10 hits in the game.

On Sunday, Custer could manage only two hits as Krogstad struggled against Chadron. Krogstad’s record stands at 5-3, plus one save, for the season.

Each of the top six teams in the poll qualified for the North Central Regional Tournament in 2007.
