A Rapid City man charged with murdering another man during a game of horseshoes has waived

his right to a speedy trial, giving his lawyers more time to prepare his defense.

State law generally says people accused of crimes must get trials within 180 days, but

exceptions can be requested.

Jesus Torres Jr. is accused of killing 44-year-old Paul Ortiz on June 28 during a backyard brawl.

Ortiz reportedly was shot in the head when he tried to break up a fight at his home.

The 41-year-old Torres is charged with second-degree murder and an alternate count of

first-degree manslaughter.
