VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP: Belle Fourche sweeps Hill City

HILL CITY — Belle Fourche swept Hill City in three sets in Black Hills Conference girls high school volleyball Thursday night.
After dropping the first two games 25-14, 25-13, Hill City made a solid run in the third game before falling, 29-27.
Belle Fourche was led by Brianne Anderson, 14-of-15 in serving with four aces and two solo blocks. Kelsi Larson and Jennifer Jeitz each had seven kills and Serena Kokesh had 15 assists for the Lady Broncs.
“We were pretty well focused for the first two games tonight, so that was an improvement,” said Belle Fourche coach Loree Schlictemeier. “We lost our focus in the third game, so that’s something we need to continue to work on.
“Overall, I’m pleased with the way we played tonight. The girls worked well together,” she said.
Amanda Straw was 11-of-13 in attacks with six kills for Hill City. Mariah Asheim was 12-of-15 in serving with four aces, and added six kill-assists. Alise Kelting had a solo block for the Rangers.
“We started out slow, but we really came on in the third game. Both Belle Fourche and Hill City are up-and-coming teams. Hopefully, we can improve and be a contender by the end of the season,” said Hill City coach Susan Roth.
Hill City, (0-2 overall, 0-1 BHC), hosts Custer in another league contest on Sept. 9. Belle Fourche, (2-0 overall, 2-0 BHC), travels to St. Thomas More for another conference matchup, also on Sept. 9.
GETTYSBURG 3, EUREKA-BOWDLE 1: The Rattlers kept their perfect record intact after sweeping Eureka/Bowdle 3-0 on Thursday in prep volleyball action.
The Battlers defeated the Patriots 25-10, 29-27, 25-18 to improve their season record to 5-0.
Andrea Tanner led Gettysburg with seven kills, making good on 15-of-15 chances. Tanner also finished with three aces and two blocks.
Gettysburg hosts Faulkton Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
TIMBER LAKE 3, BISON 0: Timber Lake swept past Bison in volleyball action on Thursday night in three games, 25-14, 25-13, 25-19 to improve to 2-0 on the year.
Timber Lake amassed 25 kills as Jaclyn Richter and Kasidee Traversie combined for 20.
Danielle Long added a team-high five aces with Becky Maher adding eight assists for the winners.
Bison (0-1 overall) will visit Rapid City Christian on Saturday for a dual match and Timber Lake will travel to Stanley County for a triangular on Tuesday in Fort Pierre.
PHILIP 3, KADOKA AREA 0: Philip dispatched Kadoka Area in three sets as the Scotties enjoyed a 25-10, 25-8, 25-9 volleyball triumph over the Kougars on Thursday night.
Sierra Hook had nine kills and four blocks, while Abby Fitzgerald added seven kills and two blocks for Philip in the win.
Fitzgerald also chipped in with five aces and two blocks while Taylor Holman dished out 25 assists in the three games to pace the Scotties.
EDGEMONT 3, SIOUX COUNTY, NEB. 2: Edgemont went on the road Thursday night and came away with a hard fought five-match win over the Warriors in a high school volleyball dual.
The Moguls prevailed, 25-23, 22-25, 23-25, 25-20, 15-9, to run their season mark to 7-1 on the year.
Edgemont will entertain New Underwood on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
NEWELL 3, CUSTER 0: Newell avenged an early season loss to Custer by defeating the Wildcats, 25-19, 25-18, 25-20 Thursday night in Black Hills Conference volleyball action.
The Irrigators had lost to the Wildcats in last week’s Custer Invitational.
“Newell has great hitters,” said Custer head coach Renae Schneider. “I think we we’re coming off of a high from beating Lead-Deadwood and thought we had an easy opponent after already beating Newell this year.”
Custer’s Johnah Menken served a perfect 13-of-13 while teammate Kristy Deatherage was 9-of-9.
Newell travels to Lead-Deadwood on Tuesday and Custer (2-6 overall) hosts Newcastle, Wyo., today at 4:30 p.m.
BENNETT COUNTY 3, HOT SPRINGS 2: Bennett County came from behind and edged Hot Springs, 3-2, in a nonconference volleyball contest on Thursday.
After losing the first match, 27-25, the Lady Warriors bounced back to win 25-14 and 25-17. The Lady Bison evened things up by winning the fourth match 25-23, but the final game belong to Bennett County 15-10.
“It was a good win for us,” said Bennett County head coach Vera O’Neill. “Laura Porch filled in for Kelsie Harris who rolled her ankle really bad. Porch did an excellent job at the setter position.”
Bennett County (1-1 overall) meets Gregory and Winner at 4 p.m in Winner and Hot Springs (0-1) travels to Douglas on Tuesday with a start time of 7 p.m.
STURGIS 3, DOUGLAS 1: Sturgis defeated Douglas 25-10, 25-12, 25-27, 26-24 in volleyball on Thursday night at Brown High School.
Rebekah Larson and Breanna Janovy paced the Scooper attack with 13 and 11 kills, respectively.
Janovy added seven aces and a solo block to go along with five assisted blocks in the four games while Larson had 10 assists and five digs for the winners.
Emily Lynass had a game-high 18 digs for Sturgis now 1-3 on the year.
The Patriots Christina Scheler had six kills with Jordan McCausland handing out 24 assists.
Douglas, 1-2, hosts Hot Springs on Tuesday while Sturgis will participate in the East River GDC Tournament today and Saturday.
WINNER DROPS A PAIR ON THE ROAD: Winner came up short in the Valentine volleyball triangular on Thursday as the host Badgers defeated the Warriors 25-17, 25-13.
Ainsworth, Neb., then spilled Winner, 25-13, 25-19.
No other statistics were available.
Winner will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Bennett County.
RED CLOUD FALLS IN TWO: Red Cloud dropped a pair of volleyball matches to a pair of Nebraska teams on Thursday.
The Crusaders fell to Hay Springs 25-11, 25-10 before losing to the host 25-19, 25-10.
No other statistics were available.
Red Cloud will host Little Wound on Thursday as the two rivals meet for the first time this season.
PINE RIDGE 3, ST. FRANCIS 0: Pine Ridge swept district opponent St. Francis Indian 25-10, 25-10, 25-9 Thursday in prep volleyball action.
“We we’re pretty confident with the matchup after we finished the Custer Invite with a record of 4-1,” said Pine Ridge assistant coach Monica Weston. “We bounced back from the loss to Edgemont and this was a good win.”
Faadia Tasso and Lacey Weston had 18 and 13 kills respectively to lead the Lady Thorpes.
Pine Ridge (6-1 overall) travels to Todd County on Thursday.
