A local construction firm will lead the restoration and expansion of Custer State Park’s historic State Game Lodge.

J. Scull Construction Services of Rapid City was awarded the $2.35 million contract, the S.D. Department of Game, Fish & Parks announced.

Workers will strip additions and remodeling to restore the original look of the lodge, built in the early 1920s. New construction will include a handicap-accessible public entrance in the back of the lodge, a larger dining area, a new kitchen and gift shop.

ARC International architectural firm of Rapid City is handling the designs.

The work is the last major component of a two-year, $12 million facility improvement project, said Doug Hofer, state director of parks and recreation. The 2007 state Legislature approved the project.

The Game Lodge project will begin after the Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup and Art Festival, Sept. 27-29. The project is due to be finished May 1.

Scull Construction has experience working in the park; it recently remodeled and expanded the Sylvan Lake Auditorium.

Other major projects included improvements at the Blue Bell Lodge and Store, installation of camping cabins and construction of Creekside Lodge, along Grace Coolidge Creek on the State Game Lodge grounds.
