Cavaliers remain undefeated

RAPID CITY — St. Thomas More dominated Douglas in all aspects of the game, stifling the Patriots for a 43-6 Black Hills Conference football win Friday night at rainy O’Harra Stadium.

The matchup was seen as an early season yardstick, featuring two undefeated Black Hills Conference  teams at the outset, but it was St. Thomas More that had the full measure of Douglas, keeping the Patriots deep in their own territory most of the night.

The Patriots were held to just three first downs and 20 yards of net offense, while the Cavaliers’ attack piled up 350 yards.

“You’ve got to play all facets of the game, offense, defense and special teams,” said More head coach Wayne Sullivan. “Again we were blessed with our kickoff team pinning them deep and our punt team giving us good field position.

“They got a couple of big punt returns and the whole first half we couldn’t pass our 20,” said Douglas coach Dave Broadie. “You have to give St. Thomas More credit. They took it to us and won the ball game.”

Zach Cimburek paved the way for More on the ground, with 23 carries for 164 yards and two touchdowns, including a 48-yard jaunt down the right sideline as the third quarter expired.

“I was trying to use my strengths the best I could and just got the best of it,” Cimburek said of the long scoring run.  

Reserve Tyler Richardson added a four-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Jared Jacobson threw for 74 yards and a pair of touchdowns, a 10 yarder to Conor Casey in the first quarter, and a 29-yard loft to Parker Sullivan in the second quarter.

Douglas’ lone score came on a broken play by the Cavaliers deep in their own territory. Jacobson attempted a backward pass to Jeremy Kudrna, but instead the ball was tipped into the hands of Douglas defender James Roberts who ran the fumble recovery 17 yards for the score.

“That was a bad call on my part,” said Sullivan. “I think everyone in the stadium knew what I was going to do.”

Keying the More defense was Trevor Hatch, Jeremiah Brewster and Spencer Seljeskog, each with seven tackles, while Cimburek added six tackles.

“Our boys came out with good intensity and played all four quarters,” added Sullivan.

“They came out ready to play and we weren’t,” said Broadie. “I thought we could play with them, but we made too many mistakes and just couldn’t get our offense going.”

St. Thomas More, (3-0 overall) hosts Chamberlain in a non-conference matchup next Friday night at Dutton Field. Douglas (2-1, 1-1  BHC) hosts Class AA opponent Spearfish next Friday night at Patriot Field.
