Volleyball: Pierre sweeps aside Sturgis, Spartans

The Pierre Lady Governors grabbed a couple of non-conference volleyball wins over Spearfish and Sturgis on Saturday at Riggs High School.
The Lady Govs, the Class AA runner-up last season, swept Spearfish, 25-17, 25-12, 25-15, and lost one game to Sturgis, beating the Scoopers, 25-17, 25-19, 23-25, 25-20.
Jenna Crosswait led the Spartans (0-9) with five kills. Abby Albers had 14 set assists and Keri Konstance chipped in with 14 digs. Danica Engesser had three block assists for the Spartans.
Rebekah Larson and Kimber Keszler led the Scoopers (1-8) with eight and seven kills, respectively, while Emily Lynass had 18 digs. Larson also had 12 set assists to lead Sturgis.
Both the Spartans and Scoopers will travel to Dickinson, N.D., on Friday for the two-day Dickinson Invitational.
White River 3, Wall 0: White River slipped past Wall, 25-20, 27-25, 25-18, in a Saturday afternoon volleyball match-up.
For Wall, Loni Humphrey and Madison McLaughlin each made seven kills. Tiana Kjerstad made 13 assists to help the Eagle offense.
Kelsey Huether led the defense with 14 digs. Katrina Kjerstad had six kills, seven digs and a pair of solo blocks for the Eagles. Wall (6-5 overall) hosts Lyman on Tuesday and White River (8-1) hosts Pine Ridge on Thursday.
Edgemont 3, Custer 1: Edgemont bounced back after losing the first game and defeated Custer 22-25, 25-18, 25-12, 25-19 in volleyball action on Saturday.
The Moguls were led by Liz Humiston’s seven kills and three blocks. Chyla Koller was 25-of-25 serving and finished with 13 digs for Edgemont.
“We struggle with an intensity problem and we came out and didn’t have any enthusiasm,” said Edgemont head coach Randy Stevens. “Custer played a great game and I was worried. I was very happy we came back and won the match.”
Edgemont (12-2 overall) travels to Red Cloud and Custer (3-11) hosts Douglas on Tuesday.
New Underwood wins Kadoka tournament: New Underwood held off Rapid City Christian to claim the tournament championship and finish undefeated in the Kadoka Area Volleyball Tournament on Saturday in Kadoka.
The Tigers took the first match 25-21, but Christian responded with a 25-14 win in the second set. New Underwood squeezed out 25-23 and 27-25 wins in the final two sets for the win.
“The team was really energetic and fought ‘til the end,” Comet head coach Juliana Tomek said. “New Underwood’s best server, Josie Derr, came in and she took us down on the two points she needed to for the win.”
The Tigers’ early wins came over Takini 25-4, 25-20 and Oelrichs 25-22, 26-24.
The Comets defeated Crazy Horse 25-12, 25-15 and Little Wound 27-25, 25-21 to advance to the championship.
“I think it’s been two years since we were in a tournament final and we almost beat the No. 1 team,” Tomek said.
Rapid City Christian (3-11 overall) gets another shot at New Underwood (9-4) on Monday in New Underwood at 6 p.m.
The following players were named to the all-tournament team: Teri Heavlin, Laura Barber and Josie Derr of New Underwood; Christy Schultz, Valerie Graumann and Nikki Blumenthal of Rapid City Christian; Tawnishay Hunter and Jessica Rouillard of Little Wound; Davidica Youngman of Oelrichs; Cally Carlson and Emmylou Antonsen of Kadoka Area; and Summer Afraid of Hawk of Takini.
