HOT SPRINGS — Hill City’s Andy Coy wowed the spectators and his fellow competitors at the Hot Springs Invitational by striding to a win in the boys event Tuesday afternoon.
When Coy came in with a time of 17 minutes, 03 seconds on a tough, hilly Hot Springs course a few of his fellow competitors and fans were moved to a few “wow, what a time” comments at such a quick time on the course.
“Andy Coy blew this course away today,” said Hot Springs head coach John Entwisle. “This was a great day for a race and Andy proved it. This course is definitely one of the tougher courses in the hills.”
The win for Coy was his third in four races this season.
“Today I just wanted to push myself hard,” said Coy.” “At this point in the year I want to stay consistent in every race and keep pushing myself, especially up these hills. That was what was extremely tough about this course. That is what is great about this time of year, there are a lot of hills which is great because it is challenging.”
Coy was challenged for the first half of the race by Todd County’s Marc Whirlwind Soldier, who went stride for stride with Coy, but fell off the pace in the second half finishing with a time of 17:22.
“Marc is a great racer, and for four years now he and I have been running together,” Coy said. “He pushed me really hard for the first part of the race. I just managed to put some distance between us at the end.”
The win for Coy propelled Hill City into a fifth-place team finish, and his coach, and brother, Jesse Coy, was impressed with his effort.
“Andy had a good race today,” said Jesse Coy. “We knew coming in that Marc Whirlwind Soldier from Todd County was going to be tough. He finished third in the state last year. But Andy’s raced extremely well this year and held him off. He’s put on a lot of mileage this year and it’s paying off.”
Colton Njos, of Belle Fourche, finished third at 18:01, Justin Werners, of Newcastle, finished fourth at 18:42, and Henry Crow, of Red Cloud, finished fifth at 18:44.
In the girls event, Lottie Grimshaw, of Todd County, finished first with a time of 18:49, Jessica Tall. of Pine Ridge, was second at 20:01, and Baily Voss, of Lead, finished third at 20:10.
Todd County won the girls team event with 18 points, followed by Newcastle with 27, and Lead-Deadwood with 35.
Newcastle, Wyo., won the boys event with 21 points, followed by Red Cloud with 54 and Hot Springs in third with 58 points.
