RAPID CITY — South Dakota School of Mines athletics director Hugh Welsh has been named the 2008 Grand Marshal for the ‘M’ Week Homecoming parade which is slated for Saturday at 11 a.m.
“It is a great honor to be the Grand Marshal of the homecoming parade,” Welsh said. “My wife and I are really looking forward to all the homecoming activities — in particular the coronation and bonfire on Thursday, the picnic at ‘M’ hill on Friday and obviously, and most importantly, the parade and victorious football game on Saturday.”
‘M’ Week has a more than 90-year history at the School of Mines.
Homecoming will be capped off with the Dakota Athletic Conference football game against Mayville State. The Hardrockers faced the Comets twice last season, with both outings coming right down to the final play of the game.
Following the football game will be the Hardrocker Hall of Fame Induction Banquet in the Christensen Hall of Fame Room at the King Center. The banquet begins at 6 p.m.

Journal looking for nominations,
committee members
RAPID CITY — Beginning the first weekend of January, the Rapid City Journal sports department will present the Top 25 West River Teams of All Time, a weekly countdown highlighting area teams and their accomplishments. The countdown will culminate with the top West River team of all time.
The countdown will include high school, college and professional teams from the West River area. But, the Journal cannot do it alone, so we are asking for help from you — the reader.
We are looking for knowledgeable, opinionated West River sports fans who would be willing to be part of a committee the Journal is putting together to help construct the list. If you would be interested in putting together this list, give Journal sports editor Andrew Cutler a call at 605-394-8291.
The Journal is also looking for team nominations from readers.
Nominations for high school teams, including non-sanctioned sports like soccer, baseball, soccer and softball, and summer sports, like American Legion Baseball and ASA Softball are being accepted. Teams from Black Hills State, National American University, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, along with professional teams like the Rapid City Thrillers, are also in the mix.
Teams must have won a title in their respective sport to be considered.
Nominations must be received by Oct. 10 and can be sent to andrew.cutler@rapidcityjournal.com. Nominations can also be dropped off at the Journal.
