SPEARFISH — The 12th Annual Black Hills State University Swarm Days Disc Golf Tournament was hosted recently on the campus disc golf course with a record 50 participants.

Kevin Schwan, a junior from Aberdeen, defended his championship with a near perfect performance on the course with a 10 under par score of 44.

Par for the 18-hole course is 54. The winners for the BHSU student tournament were Schwan, with a score of 44, Josh Jangula, of Aberdeen, placing second with a score of 48. Third place was a tie between Andrew Wachs, of Aberdeen and Dustin Work, of Rapid City, with a 49.

Fourth place was also a tie. Aaron Anderson, of Lake Preston and Aaron Webster, of Spearfish, each had 50s. Michael Roberts, of Spearfish, placed fifth with a 51.

There was a four-way tie for sixth place. Brett Schmidt, of Scottsbluff, Neb.; Brandon Baker, of Ekalaka, Mont.; Ethan Plumb, of Rapid City; and Josh Green, of Gillette, Wyo., each had scores of 52.

In the community division, a new 20-hole, par-60 layout was introduced to the players. Ryan Smith, president of the Countryside Disc Golf Club, scored an impressive 48 strokes — 12 under par.

Second place went to Tyler Scovell, of Spearfish, with a 50. Don Altmyer, of Spearfish, was third with a 51, and Dallas Horsley, of Whitewood, was fourth with a score of 52. Fifth place was a tie between Schwan, and Nelson Horsley, of Whitewood, with 53s. Sixth place was a tie between Wachs, and Hudson Horsley, of Whitewood, with 54s. Adam Cortez, of Spearfish, was seventh with a 56, and Brice Johnson, of Spearfish, was eighth with a 57.

Prizes and refreshments were provided by the BHSU Swarm Days Homecoming Committee, the BHSU Bookstore, and the Countryside Disc Golf Club.

The next two on-campus disc golf tournaments are the Shawn Funk Memorial Ice Bowl, which is the weekend before the Super Bowl — with proceeds going to the Spearfish Food Bank — and the ninth annual Spring Fling on May 1, 2009. There will be student and community divisions.
