Sturgis artist Rick Wieczorek takes a chainsaw to timber to create more than a cord of fuel. He also reveals wildlife from 18 inches to 11 feet high. He will have a selection of carvings for sale from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Pinedale Bazaar, 4901 W. Chicago St.

“I’m out at my studio by 7:30 a.m.,” Wieczorek said of his craft work ethic.

It will be the first time for the chainsaw artist to take part at the bazaar, which has more than 50 booths filled with homemade crafts, foods and art squeezed into Pinedale Elementary School.

As usual, this fall is filled with area craft bazaars (See list).

Among those, the Sturgis Regional Hospital Auxiliary will host its annual fall festival on Thursday, Oct. 23. Anna Ginter of Sturgis will manage the auxiliary gift shop. While she does many crafts, including making lap robes for people in the nursing homes and heart pillows for the hospital’s cardio pulmonary and surgery units, she also makes linens and other crafts especially for the festival.

“I make appliqued dishtowels and table runners, which sell pretty good,” said the 78-year-old grandmother. “I try to make the table runners reversible so you can use them on either side.”

Ginter learned to sew at home nearly 65 years ago on a treadle sewing machine. She continued to sew throughout her life, constructing clothes for her children and grandchildren. Over the years, she has noticed that fewer and fewer people sew.

“People don’t even mend anymore,” she said.

Ginter does a little oil or acrylic painting, but she doesn’t sell her art. She also has stopped attaching zippers to her clothing — too troublesome. But she continues to return to her sewing machine to whip up a pillow, towels, table linen or lap rugs.

“It’s relaxing for me; I don’t watch a lot of TV,” she said.

For more than 20 years, she has contributed her skills to the auxiliary fall festival for a variety of reasons.

“It’s about working together, meeting new people. I don’t know. It’s as good a reason as any,” she said. “But there’s something about giving of your self.”

Bud and Darlene Knight of Rushville, Neb., worked for untold hours and traveled hundreds of miles between fairs and festivals in western South Dakota to sell handcrafted wooden benches and chairs that converted into ironing boards.

“We sold more than 100 of those ironing board chairs,” Darlene Knight said.

It kept her husband busy and they got to do quite a little traveling, but once Bud turned 84, they decided to give up the craft fair circuit.

“We did it for 18 years,” Darlene Knight said.
