Mayor Alan Hanks issued the challenge to increase membership, and the Rapid City Public Library last month more than exceeded the goal.
The effort to increase the number of library users was timed to the American Library Association's yearly "National Library Card Sign-Up Month" promotion.
The mayor called for beating the 2007 numbers by 10 percent. The library need 825 new and renewing members, and it "robustly exceeded this goal with 1,223," according to a news release.
Officials credited community and corporate help that allowed the library to offer prize incentives.
Lonna Romero, a student at Oglala Lakota College, won the iBook computer donated by Computer Village. Elizabeth Schubert won the hockey stick autographed by the new Rapid City Rush players, who also read stories and talked about their sport with library kids.
