Volleyball roundup: Douglas stays unbeaten in BHC

Douglas finished perfect in Black Hills Conference play with a 25-14, 26-24, 21-25, 24-26, 15-9 win over Hot Springs on Monday night in prep volleyball action.
In the final set, the Bison found themselves up 5-2, but Douglas turned it around.
“Both teams were hitting the ball very well,” said Hot Springs head coach Stacie Collins. “There were some really good volleys. We really felt good about the way we played tonight.”
Kelsey Schwartz was 19-of-20 serving with one ace and had three blocks for the Patriots. Christina Scheler finished with 16 kills, 23 digs and two blocks in the win.
The Bison were led by Randi Weiss, who had four aces, four kills, three blocks and 64 kill-assists.
Douglas (21-7 overall, 14-0 BHC) hosts Chadron at 5:15 p.m. Friday, and Hot Springs (19-9, 10-4 BHC) hosts Hill City in the first round of the district playoffs on Nov. 4.
Custer 3, St. Thomas More 2: Melissa Flores was 21-of-24 hitting with 16 kills to lead Custer to a hard-fought 17-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-20, 15-13 prep volleyball win over St. Thomas More on Senior Night on Monday.
“Our passing was better than it has been,” said Custer head coach Renae Schneider. “We still have a lot of things to work on for playoffs. We missed a lot of serves and weren’t transitioning the way we need to off the net.”
Sophomore Taylor Neugebauer was 10-of-11 serving with 2 aces, had five kills and was 18-of-18 receiving for the Wildcats. Teammate Allison Kostelecky followed with four aces and three kills in the win.
Custer (12-19 overall, 5-9 BHC) hosts Red Cloud and St. Thomas More (24-7, 10-4) hosts Lead-Deadwood in district playoffs on Tuesday.
Philip 3, New Underwood 0: Sierra Hook had 17 kills and two blocks as Philip swept New Underwood 25-15, 25-19, 25-14, Monday night in prep volleyball action.
“They’re (Philip) probably one of the better teams in the state,” said New Underwood head coach Scott McDonald. “We struggled with their serving and when they would get up by six or seven points, we struggled to get back in the game.”
Taylor Holman was 9-10 serving and had 30 assists and 11 digs for the Scotties.
The Tigers’ Laura Barber finished with 11 digs, three blocks and two kills in the match, and Teri Heavlin followed with five kills, four blocks and seven digs.
New Underwood (17-13) faces Wall in the first round of the district tournament, November 4 in Edgemont.
Newell 3, Faith 2: Newell bounced back after losing game one and defeated Faith 12-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-19, 16-14 in prep volleyball action Monday night.
“They’re (Faith) very athletic and I expected it to be a close game,” said Newell head coach Teresa Pittman. “We did have better serving after game one and just moved around the court better.”
Jenna Diers finished with 11 kills, four digs, three solo blocks and two block assists to pace the Irrigators. Renee Waterland followed with 16 assists and two digs, while Mandi Durch had 11 digs and nine kills in the victory.
Newell (20-14 overall) hosts Belle Fourche Tuesday night in the first round of district playoffs.
Rapid City Christian 3, Kadoka Area 2: Rapid City Christian overcame an early deficit and closed out the regular season with a 20-25, 23-25, 25-17, 25-12, 15-9 win over Kadoka Area in a volleyball match Monday night.
Senior Nikki Blumenthal was 21-of-21 serving with 44 assists to pace the Comets, and Megan Baker finished with three aces.
“It’s how much intensity the girls had in the final three games that made the difference,” said Rapid City Christian head coach Juliana Tomek.
Rapid City Christian (6-21) travels to Edgemont to face the Moguls when district playoffs begin on November 4.
Cheyenne-Eagle Butte 3, Crow Creek 0: Cheyenne-Eagle Butte topped Crow Creek in three games, 25-13, 25-14 and 25-13 Monday night in high school volleyball action.
Lacey Leaf and Tiara Maxon paced the Braves with 11 total kills. Mariah Cook added eight service aces and five set assists for C-EB. Cheyenne-Eagle Butte (15-11) will play at Standing Rock, N.D. tonight at 5 p.m.
Crow Creek statistics were unavailable. The Lady Chieftains dropped to 0-14 with the loss.
Miller Area 3, Highmore-Harrold 0: The Miller Area Rustlers dropped Highmore-Harrold 25-15, 25-19 and 25-11 in a high school volleyball match Monday night.
Kate Lingscheit led the Rustlers (22-5) with 10 kills and five blocks. Marisa Blackwell added nine kills for Miller. The Rustlers will be in action next for the District 11A tournament on Nov. 4 and Nov. 6 in Miller.
Highmore-Harrold fell to 18-8 with the loss and will move on to District 5B play in Huron next.
Bennett County 3, Wall 0: Bennett County defeated Wall 25-12,
25-19, 25-16 in a prep volleyball match on Monday.
“Bennett County came out swinging, and we just didn’t play together,” said Wall head coach Steph Williams.
The Eagles’ Katrina Kjerstad was 13-of-14 serving with one ace, while Loni Humphry finished with 8 kills.
Bennett County (18-11 overall) travels to Pine Ridge on November 4 for district playoffs and Wall (14-13) travels to Philip on Thursday to wrap up the regular season.
