College basketball roundup: Mines women pick up win

The South Dakota Mines women’s basketball team shot 62.5 percent from the floor in the opening half against Dakota Wesleyan on Monday on its way to a 82-69 non-conference basketball win.

The Hardrockers (2-2 overall) cooled off in the second half but managed to hold the Tigers to 30 percent shooting in the final 20 minutes to pick up their second win of the season.

Moorcroft, Wyo., junior Bethany Holyoak had a great game for the ’Rockers as she scored 25 points on 8-for-12 shooting and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. Maria Luze chipped in with 18 points and five rebounds for Mines while Loryn Schuetzle and Ariel Granillo each had 13 points.

The Hardrockers will take on Rocky Mountain College on Friday at 7 p.m.

Dakota Wesleyan (2-2) cut the Mines lead to four at 68-64 with 4:47 to play in the second half, but the Hardrockers outscored the Tigers 14-5 from that point on. Allison Johnson paced the Tigers with 20 points. Wesleyan will play Gustavus Adolphus College tonight at 7 p.m. CST.

Mount Marty 60, No. 18 Black Hills State 44: The No. 18-ranked Black Hills State Yellow Jacket women’s team was held to just 17 first-half points as they were upset by Mount Marty, 60-44, in a non-conference basketball game Monday.

Michelle Amundson paced the Lancers (3-0) with 20 points and Katelynn Kunz chipped in with 11 and five assists.

Brittany Fuhrman was the only Yellow Jacket to register double figures in scoring, as Black Hills (3-1) shot 32 percent from the floor as a team. Fuhrman finished the night with 10 points. The Yellow Jackets will be in action again on Friday at 5 p.m. against Doane College at Goodell Gymnasium in Rapid City.

MEN’S GAMES

DAKOTA WESLEYAN 68, S.D. MINES 63
: Brady Wiebe powered the Dakota Wesleyan men’s basketball to a 68-63 victory over the visiting South Dakota School of Mines on Monday in Mitchell.

Wiebe recorded the only double-double in the game with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Colby Fitzgerald scored 15 points and Ike Muoneke put 14 points on the board and grabbed 7 rebounds for the Tigers.

For the ‘Rockers, Robbie Fedor led the team with 16 points. Nathan Jacobson netted 10 points and recorded four assists.

Mines shot 41 percent from the field on the night (24-of-58). The Hardrockers struggled from the 3-point line, hitting only 5-of-26 for 19 percent.

Mines (2-2 overall) hosts Rocky Mountain College on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Goodell Gymnasium.

No. 8-ranked Dakota Wesleyan (3-1) travels to Jamestown College to face the Jimmies on Friday.

BLACK HILLS STATE 80, MOUNT MARTY 61: Black Hills State broke open a tight game in the second half by outscoring the host Lancers 46-28 to earn a 80-61 win over Mount Marty in Yankton on Monday evening.

The win was the second win of the roadtrip for the Yellow Jackets who knocked off Dakota Wesleyan in overtime on Sunday 97-92 in Mitchell.   

BHSU’s frontline proved to be too much for Mount Marty as Luke Enos, Randy Herman and Will John Johnson accounted for 53 points.

Enos led the way with 18 points with guard Parker Emerson chipping in with 14 markers.

Johnson recorded a double-double by snaring 12 rebounds to go with his 10 points.     

Mount Marty (0-3) stayed close for the first 20 minutes as they trailed by one, 34-33 at the intermission.  

The Yellow Jackets bench contributed 37 points in the win.

Rudy Harper had a game-high 20 points for the Lancers.

Black Hills (2-0) will take on Rocky Mountain College on Friday and Montana Tech at the Young Center on Friday and Saturday.
