SPEARFISH -- The Spearfish Wal-Mart Supercenter re-opened Monday morning, four days after wet snow damaged part of its roof and exterior, forcing an evacuation. There were no injuries.

A building inspector from the city of Spearfish cleared the facility to open Monday. Crews and inspectors worked on an area near the meat and cheese coolers on the east side of the store, which remains cordoned off.

"I don't know where the assessing stops, and the work begins," store manager Tom Jones said. He estimated 5 percent of the floor space remained blocked off for safety purposes.

The roof didn't collapse entirely last Thursday, but shifted under tons of heavy, wet snow. The load caused the outside wall to buckle and the roof area to sag downward five or six feet.

Popping sounds in the roof around 6:15 a.m. prompted his assistant manager to evacuate the store, Jones said.

The damage is in the same area as a partial collapse 2-1/2 years, also due to snow. That event knocked out power to freezers and ruined frozen and refrigerated foods in the grocery area.

It also shut down the store for three days, and it took about $1 million and more than two months to get the store back to 100 percent operation, Jones said.
